Editorial review from Citysearch 9/29/2012

The student did not do too well but the instructor made it better. I gave the student 5 out of 10. I gave the final result 7 out of 10. I was there for about an hour and half and the cost for shampoo, cut and style is $18.00. The overall experience is very good. Will I ever go back again? Probably, until I find a hairdresser I like. more

Thank you for taking the time to share with us. 3/31/2011

We wish to thank all who have taken time to review The Aveda Institute San Antonio. We consider positive and negative reviews to be a gift. We always want to know the feelings of our students and guests, and we work diligently to provide quality education and services. At The Aveda Institute San Antonio and Corpus Christi, we pride ourselves in offering a comprehensive study format developed to target a variety of learning personalities. We are also very careful to provide a study course in compliance with the Texas Department of License and Regulations, offer hands on experience in a salon-like environment, and have in-school study time to help ensure testing success. Our Educators are there to provide training, leadership, and support to our students. It is unfortunate if even one of our students did not feel value in their time with us. We take seriously any complaint related to our culture and practices, and will take action as necessary to correct any misunderstandings or misbehavior on our part. We realize, as with any study course, it is pertinent that both Institution and Student be engaged with a positive and open attitude to ensure a rewarding outcome. It has been our unfortunate experience over the years that a small number of educators/students have come to our Institute unprepared to either give or receive instruction in the manner we desire. If there is no other recourse, those persons will be terminated from employment or, in the case of a student, dropped from the study program. We prefer to give our attention to those educators and students that understand the future opportunities of our graduating classes. As always, we stand prepared to offer a rewarding education in the fields of cosmetology and esthiology, as well as excellent student services provided to our respected guests. If at any time your expectations are not being met, please ask to speak to one of our supervisors. more

Dont Attend 2/1/2011

As a recent graduate from the Aveda Institute San Antonio i have a large opinion on this school. First of all i would like to start off by advising no one to pay the $17,000 plus dollars to go to this school because it is a complete waste of your money. Especially when you completely learn all over, once starting an apprenticeship with a salon. My advice to someone looking to go to cosmetology school is to go to a school that you can get your license and try to get into a good apprenticeship program if you are really passionate about learning the best you can learn in the hair and make-up industry. I wish i would've known this when i first started & i would not be biting my tongue every month when I have to pay my student loan payment. I am a very very positive person, and this school did nothing besides bring my class mates and i down as far as possible during the 7 hours a day that we had to be there. It is very obvious that their is a negative vibe going throughout the school every time the lead instructor is in the building. Being a lead instructor, your job would normally include keeping the place up-beat,positive, but also structured. I am under the impression that this particular instructor has no idea what the words; up-beat, and positive mean. 90% of the time the only things that come out of her mouth are very negative with a hateful tone. Learning more about something that you love and are passionate about is suppose to be something fun for you. Yes, there is always going to be rules to follow, and that is completely understanding but this lady has a completely wrong outlook on rules than it should be. :/ Not only does this instructor give the students a hard time, but she also gives her co-workers (the other instructors) a hard time as well, and makes it very obvious to the entire salon, which is very, very unprofessional. I would almost bet the turnover rate at that school in the last two years is absolutely unreal. We, as students, could tell as soon as an instructor would become unhappy there because it would shine all over their face, and not too much longer they would end up being terminated for something ridiculous or quitting because they couldn't handle it anymore. I know while I was attending the Aveda Institute their was at least 6 instructors that came and left (i was only there for 10 months). One other thing that someone would frown on when meeting this instructor is the fact that she is not very up to date with fashion, and being a lead instructor at such a high profile cosmetology school you would think that the institute would hire someone for the job that is at least up to date with the latest fashion. ex: hair, make-up, wardrobe, etc. To sum this all up, i was very very disappointed by my experience at the Aveda Institute San Antonio, and would not recommend anyone to attend that particular institute. I really hate to put this out there so everyone can see but it is very disgusting to me every month when i have to pay back that payment to know that it was such a horrible experience, and i thought it would be such a great thing going into it. I wish someone would've told me what i know, now and i would have been able to make a more educated decision on what institute to attend. more

Don't recommend for long/thick/challenging hair 7/7/2009

If you have long/thick/challenging hair, this is not the right place for yo; You're better off going to a more seasoned, experienced professional. I went in for a color and haircut and I knew my hair would be a challenge so I specifically requested a ""senior"" student. I believe she tried her best, but in the end it proved to be to much of a challenge for her and although the color was great the haircut was less than flattering. I interacted with two very different supervisors, one was very friendly and personable, the other was an angry drill sergeant. As with any large operation, the skill set and personalities of the students and supervisors is going to vary from very good to bad. Pros: Economical Cons: Not suited for long/thick hair more

A, B, and C level work. 4/17/2009

This is unique, it's Aveda after all. Students are really nice or really bitchy. Pricing is great, appointments book up super fast, especially on Saturdays. They are closed on Sunday and Monday, so your best bet is to go on Tues-Thurs, maybe sneak in a Friday, but those as almost as busy as Saturdays. Pros: Price Cons: Students can be hitt or miss more

Great Services 8/2/2007

I have gone to this schoolhouse about three times and every time, I leave very satisfied. I have been trying to grow out a bad haircut and each time, the stylist took the time and had the expertise to cut my hair in the most flattering way. Also, the price is quite reasonable, 15. So, it is really easy to leave a big tip for such awesome services. Lastly, at the end of each cut, the master stylist checks off on the cut and signs off on it. Each time this has taken place, they really take the time to make sure everything is done correctly. Pros: Awesome prices and great services Cons: You might have to wait a little for your appointment to begin more

High quality service at a discounted rate! 10/12/2006

The students at Aveda are very friendly and competent. I have gotten a pedicure and eyebrow wax here and loved both. The salon is almost always booked, but it is definitely worth the dirt cheap prices. You should also allot a little more than what you would expect from a typical spa -- The students take a little longer than professional technicians to complete each appointment (but produce the same quality of work!). Pros: Great prices, friendly staff, quality work Cons: No walk-in appointments, appointments are really long more
