Must try at least once....and then you'll be hooked! 7/15/2011

When I go to or even pass through Austin, we gotta exit I35 to get some good food. Food at Aster's is GREAT! I typically eat the vegetarian combination plate. Last time I was there I was able to purchase ingredients and a Shiro home made mix so I could make some at home. Staff and owners are very warm and inviting. Place is not fancy, but fancy places dont have the real thing like Aster's Restaurant. more

Good Food, FAST Service, No Frills Decor 10/30/2010

We tried several different things on the menu and they were all very good. The food was literally on our table within 5 minutes of us ordering. The quantities of food were good and we didn't leave feeling hungry. The service was good and they were good about suggesting things for us to try. The decor does not add to the experience but the restaurant was clean. I would eat there again. more

Good Food 4/29/2009

the food is good...I have had better Ethiopian and with better ambiance. The problem here is the decor, insufficient parking, too loud due to i35. For almost 15$ per person I would have wanted better ambiance! Pros: Good food Cons: Decor, insufficient parking, too loud due to i35 more

Editorial
  • In Short
The no-frills atmosphere leads diners to believe they've discovered a hidden gem among all of the campus-area fast food establishments. Two side dishes and two injera (a traditional slightly sour flat bred used as a utensil) accompany each entrée, making for hearty portions at an affordable price. Expect to sit at tightly packed tables with mismatched décor and eat with your hands, but despite the initial shock to the system for the uninitiated, the savory stews and fragrant spices win over many a devotee. Sample the so-called national dish of Ethiopia, doro watt, a spicy chicken stew; tender beef stew with ginger and turmeric; lightly seared steak tartare with spiced butter; hearty lentil side dishes and spicy eggplant. Finish your meal with a bracing cup of Ethiopian coffee.
