Favorite Art Museum 8/20/2005

It is hard to live in Chicago and not to have visited this museum. It is a place that is hard to describe, not in what you can see, but how it makes you feel. It is such a different experience to see a print versus the real thing. You won’t be disappointed by visiting this place. more

Art Institute of Chicago 8/19/2005

The Art Institute is located right on Michigan Avenue, near Grant Park. It is a great place to spend a lunch hour, or to visit after work or on the weekends. There are so many wonderful works of art in the museum, it's hard to know where to start....but I think my two favorites are by American artists - American Gothic by Grant Wood and Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. But the Monets are beautiful as well, as is the Sunday in the Park by Seurat. But there is so much more there you just have to see it for yourself. And right now the Art Institute has a Toulouse Lautrec exhibit, but you need to purchase tickets for it. There is also a really nice gift shop, which has note cards, posters, etc. of many of the works of art that are in the museum. more

Amazing, great, wonderful 8/19/2005

The Art Institute never gets old. Whether it's seeing old exhibits again or new exhibits for the first time, trips to this museum are always exciting, enjoyable, and unique. For first-time browsers, be sure to empty out a chunk of your day -- an in-depth exploration of the museum will take a few hours. The time is worth it though. more

wonderful place to spend a day 8/18/2005

i'm not much of an art fan, but i loved the art institute in chicago. paintings from van gogh, picasso, monet, and many others highlight the exhibits there. the traveling exhibits that come through are always interesting, and i was especially fond of the arms and armor section. entrance fees are reasonable (around 10 per person i believe) and there's plenty to see. don't forget to take a picture outside in front of the lions! more

Enjoy This Art in Small Bites 8/18/2005

With a world-class museum like the Art Institute of Chicago, it is easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer size of the collection. The best way to enjoy your visit is to take a bite size approach. Come to see the Impressionists. Check out the photography exhibit downstairs. Spend some time with the Japanese wood cuts. There is so much to see, it's impossible to do it all at once. The museum features outstanding evening programs (see and be seen by young Chicagoans) and great lectures, musical performances, and family oriented events on weekends. Enjoy lunch in the inner courtyard during the summer. more

Not Just for Tourists Art Museum 8/16/2005

I really enjoy going to the Art Institute not only to see the traveling exhibits, but also the permanent collection, which is pretty impressive. They have some great Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso, the big guys you know... and they also have contemporary art as well. The place is just huge, so it might be worth getting a membership if you're in the downtown area often enough or live nearby. It's a great place to visit if you're from out of town also. more

The Art Institute Of Chicago 8/11/2005

It is great place to take a stroll in. They have a nice gift shop there. Be warned about bringing in any bags since if you do then you have to check it in of course you pay to a fee for it. Wide open spaces and plenty of benches for you to take your time. You can also check otu some of the sculptures there too. You can check out the picasso and other works. No parking but if you do park in downtown be expect to pay an arm and a leg. I advised taking the train or bus. more

Plan your family trip to the Art Institute of Chicago! A visit to the Art Institute is an opportunity for your family to experience, explore, and discover a vast new world together. Through numerous programs and resources, the Art Institute strives to increase art awareness and appreciation by providing engaging student tours, user-friendly resources in the Teacher Resource Center, online educational resources, hands-on workshops and teacher in-services that demonstrate ways to integrate museum resources into classroom curricula. Through these programs, the institute encourage visitors, educators, and students to become lifelong museum learners. Many...many famous paintings. One of the best art museums there is. Perfect for an art lover. more

A Museum for Art Lovers 8/8/2005

The Art Institute is home to a huge collection of paintings that interest most who visit. It is located in Downtown Chicago and is very accessible my the "El" Train. In there besides the paintings is a precious gems exhibit which is quite interesting. Another one of my favorites is the arms and armor exhibit. You wil probably see a number of art students there as well sketching their favorite pieces of art for their classes. There are many collections in the museum including photography, modern, and paintings from asia, africa and europe. more

One of the Best Museums 8/8/2005

I personally think that the Art Institute is one of the best museums that Chicago has to offer. While everybody knows about the classic masterpieces that are on display, I recommend checking out the other exhibits as well. The photography section often contains stunning pictures that you won't soon forget. I also like Asian collection. If you do visit the museum, just try to look at stuff that 's a little off the beaten path. more

The Grand Dame of Chicago Museums 8/5/2005

The Art Institute is Chicago's world-class Art Museum. It has particular strengths in 19th century art, including a really good Impressionist collection, but it has a large enough collection overall to do justice to just about every era. The Art Institute is free on Tuesdays, and the rest of the time, it's 'suggested donation' based. I highly recommend starting on the 2nd floor of the main building - a signature item in their 19th century collection is Seurat's La Grande Jatte which you've probably seen somewhere before. Surrounding that is the usual collection of Monets, Manets, Renoirs, et al. Park underground at Millenium Park or by the meters nearby. more

A great family day! 8/4/2005

Once you see the two lions that guard the entrance you must go in! The AIC boasts one of the best classical and contemporary art collections in the world, not to mention the 'ethnic' collections from Africa and Asia. My favorite view is the long hallway that leads to the contemporary galleries: it looks on a huge Andy Warhol painting of Mao. The lower floor has many kid-friendly exhibits, including the miniature rooms. Bathrooms are a bit spread out. Dining options are the good cafeteria style restaurant on the ground floor or the lovely Garden Restaurant in the summers. Definitely a fun-filled day for the family! more

Relive Ferris Buehler's day off! 8/1/2005

Yep, this is it! The same one from the movie! All that aside, it has some of the most influential artworks in history. Grant Wood's American Gothic (the husband and wife creepy farmers) is on permanent display here. So is A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat. Everyone seems to be amazed at how gigantic this painting is and to look at all the dots used to paint it. The Matisse stained glass windows are amazing as are the gardens in the courtyard. The cafe attached to the museum is decently priced. It is also a short walk to Millenium Park from the museum. more

Great way to spend the afternoon. 8/1/2005

I just went here for the first time yesterday. I was so impressed! To begin with, the facility is absolutely gorgeous, and HUGE. There is an impressive collection of American art, sculpture, textile, and Impressionist-era paintings (probably the best in the U.S., after the NYC MoMA). Prices are moderate but it's a "donation," so they suggest a $12 admission fee, but they'll take anything. Their special exhibit was fabulous and the docent-led tour I took was very good. I had a great afternoon here! Beware, lines get long and sometimes there is a "lottery," meaning you can't enter when you get there; you'll have to come back at a later time. I arrived at 9:45 on Sunday morning (it opens at 10:00), and there was a line over 100 people deep--so get there early, or even better, buy your tickets beforehand--you'll get in immediately without standing in line. more

Beautiful Exhibitions 7/28/2005

This is one of my favorite museums. They are always showing great exhibitions. The staff is so wonderful and well informed. If you love art, you should take advantage of their membership. It is worth it. You could stay here for hours just admiring the art. There are several things to do in the city after viewing the art as well. more

Art, Art, Art 7/25/2005

This is a great place to visit if you are in Chicago. And you don't have to be a hardcore art fan to enjoy this museum. They have lots to do here and many interesting displays to see here. Addmission is very reasonable and they even offer guided tours. I would really recommend the guided tours because you get lots of great info, including a bit of historical knowledge about the city. This museum is located right in the heart of the city. Parking can be hard to find around this place on the weekends, but there's pleny of parking garages open. more

Great Art Museum 7/25/2005

The Art Institute of Chicago is a must-see for any art lover. They have numerous masterpieces in their permanent collection, including works from Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso. They also get a lot of traveling exhibits, so there's sure to be at least one special show during the year. If you want to check out the museum, try to go on Tuesdays when admission is free to all comers! more

Must see 7/22/2005

The Art Institute of Chicago is a must see, and one of the top art museums in the country. The size of the place is HUGE! There is such a wide range of art. No ones tastes will go unsuited..Some of the contempory art can be a little questionable in its artistic merit, but that is just because in the same day you can view works from the great masters. This is a place you can get lost in. more
