While some people seem to have had bad experiences there, I can for one say that I have not. I have worked as a volunteer at the shelter with the dogs and I have always been treated kindly and respectfully by the staff and I enjoy coming buy to help walk the dogs and socialize the puppies. I can understand why the other reviewers have dealt with issues such as the individual who was met with some "attitude" since the job that these workers do is very stressful and soul crushing at times. There are constantly new animals coming in and because the shelter is a last stop shelter, if the animals cannot find a home they will be put to sleep. Like the other reviewer said it is important to know your stuff if you plan to adopt. So please don't be put off by these past comments, there are many sweet kind animals here that needs homes and people to love and care for them. more

Rude, and very unprofessional! 10/14/2010

After several weekends of visiting this facility, we have decided that this is simply the worst place to go if you are seeking to adopt. The staff are obnoxiously rude, and that is putting it lightly. We have filled out the paperwork, and even signed up to volunteer there, but after our last experience, that is totally out of the question. They have no idea of professionalism whatsoever. We went one saturday afternoon to visit the kittens, we waited one hour for them to unlock the door, on a different occasion we were not allowed in the cat cottages, after being allowed to for several weeks. It seems like a lot of these abandoned pets just need some love, and attention. Even with washing you hands one hundred times, and being very respectfull you are told that it is best if you do not visit with the pets. I have visited the facilities in Raleigh, and Chapel Hill, it is literally like night, and day in comparison, from the staff who welcome you with a friendly smile, and offer to advise you in any way, to the cleanliness, and overall health of the animals. If you plan to visit, or adopt from this facility be prepared to deal with some real attitude. more

Be prepared with questions! 4/11/2006

We recently adopted a cat from APS of Durham who happened to be very sick. When we picked him up they told us that he had an upper respiratory infection and should continue being on antibiotics. We were fine with that. However when we got him home we noticed many other health issues. He wasn't eating or drinking and was also throwing up and having diarreha. The vet said he was a very sick cat, and didn't seem optimistic about him getting better. We could have immediately returned him to the shelter, but couldn't knowing he would probably be put to sleep soon after arriving there. We are quite disappointed that APS of Durham did not inform him of his condition before taking him home. So if you are planning on adopting from APS of Durham make sure you ask lots and lots of questions before-hand. more
