Boarding 8/27/2013

I recently took my dog to their boarding facility and they charged me for the entire last day even though I picked him up at 9:30 in the morning!\r \r They have a reputation of being very pricey and trying to sell expensive procedures and services to their clients and I guess this applies to their boarding facilities as well. more

Terrible service at the Animal Hospital 8/5/2012

Long ago, I took my dogs and cats to the Animal Hospital, but switched to another vet, partly because I found the Animal Hospital to be more expensive. Since then, I've had two terrible experiences with the Animal Hospital of Carrboro.\r \r A few years ago, my elderly cat had CRF and I was giving him sub-Q fluids daily, which kept him comfortable and vastly improved his quality of life. I ran out of the fluid and it was Saturday or right before a holiday. My regular vet closed early and was far away, so I arranged to get a set for giving my cat fluids from the Animal Hospital. I talked to someone at the front desk who promised to leave the bag of supplies for me outside the clinic door, if I couldn't get to the clinic before they closed. I got there about 5 minutes after they closed, and the bag of supplies was not by the door. \r \r My cat missed his fluids that day and the next, went downhill and had to be euthanized on Monday. He probably would have only lasted a few more days o more

Greedy and uncaring 3/1/2012

I have taken my dog to the Animal Hospital of Carrboro for approximately 7 years. This morning my dog had gross amounts of blood in his stool. As this was an emergency, I did not have money in my checking account to cover the costs today; I needed to transfer from a brokerage account that I cannot access immediately and it takes 1 day to get the funds transferred. I was told that they would only see my dog if I paid cash at the time of service. I explained that my dog had blood in his stool and they agreed to see us. When I arrived, I was told that my dog would not be seen without cash up front. I explained that I had been there for years and I had always paid them for their services. MY DOG WAS DENIED CARE AND THEY REFUSED TO SEE HIM. I understand that you have to pay for services, and I have always paid for services rendered. I was allowed to pay late at our last visit, which was not an emergent visit (and I was actually overcharged). Bottom line -- these vets care more about money than about your pets. more

Please Don't Board Your Pets Here 9/13/2011

I have been taking my cat there the past couple of years and have always liked the vets. I noticed that some posters have mentioned that it is quite expensive. I don't know how it compares to the other vets in the area but I do know it is significantly cheaper than a vet I went to in North Raleigh. I recently boarded my cat and wouldn't recommend it to anybody. He came home with feces and litter dried into his fur. When I complained I was told that the technician was to blame because he should have cleaned him before bringing him out. Since my cat has never needed me to clean feces or litter from his fur in the past I feel that it shouldn't be necessary for the technician to clean him. I feel that there is either a problem with the space provided or it's general cleanliness. From what I can tell the dog kennel, though part of the same company, is a separate operation. Perhaps the dog kennel is better but I would recommend at least looking at the facilities before leaving your dog there more

Dr. Dorsch is the best!!! 7/6/2011

Dr. Erik Dorsch saved our boxer's life. After she spent five days at a local emergency vet with a grim prognosis and was turned away by the vet who provided her care for 5 years, a dear friend, who is a Durham County Animal Control Field Officer, recommended Erik. After two days in his care, Chloe was stable and able to come home. It's been over a year, and Chloe is happy and healthy. Without Dr. Dorsch's invaluable time, expert care, and immeasurable knowledge, Chloe would have died an unnecessary and painful death. Ignore the detractors on this site, and trust that The Animal Hospital of Carrboro will give your beloved pets the utmost respect and care. more

Go SomeWhere Else! 2/16/2010

Not only did they injure my dog during a procedure, they then denied it. When my dog got ill after the 'fix up' I went back, they did over $1K in tests and care and still had no idea what the problem was. I did but they refused to listen to me. When my dog lost 1/5 of body weight and was listless...I finally carried my dog to a specialist who diagnosed my pet right away and fixed the problem as best they could. I used to go here for years, when Dr Ward was there, things were different. Now, some different people run the show over there. Now, I'll never go back. I am just glad I took my pet somewhere else for care, and the medical mistake was corrected... now my dog is happy and healthy and alive! more

Too much care can be harmful, too. 8/10/2009

This veterinary practice has been purchased by Dorsch and Anderson. I hear that Ward Charles (Charles Ward?) was much beloved. I'm sorry to say that I do not love this practice and have recently decided to switch my pet over to another animal hospital.\r \r The crew at the front desk range from nice to very, very nice. They are pleasant and effificient, though when you try to get in at the last minute, no matter how long you've been a client, it can be very difficult unless it's an emergency (I had to have a vaccination for a pet before I went on vacation, and it had been put off because she wasn't well during our previous visit a month prior so the vet suggested against it and I couldn't get in so went elsewhere). When you pay top dollar, it seems like little things like being able to get in when you need to ought to be included. Their hours are also limited, so are difficult for a working person.\r \r The vet techs are very, very, very sweet and seem very knowledgable. In fact, I'v more

The only vet we use 6/7/2009

We have had only positive experiences with the Animal Hospital. We have taken our dog there for the past 5 years. Even when we moved out of town, we still drive the extra distance and keep returning. I have never felt that they were fake or lazy or incompetent. All of our questions have been adequately addressed to our satisfaction. Our dog is healthy so we don't go very often except for the routine shots. We also use the groomer...Beauty Meets the Beast and she is FANTASTIC! I will not let any other groomer touch our dog. more

The Dangers of Canine Vaccination 2/23/2009

Six weeks after receiving the rabies, bordetella, and distemper vaccinations (all at the same time 1/3/2009) at their office, my Spencer succumbed to an inoperable brain tumor on 2/21/2009. I discovered yesterday that they inputted the date of his last rabies vaccination incorrectly as 2/28/2006 instead of 12/28/2006. This means he was due for the next vaccination on 12/28/2009. The others were due on 12/28/2008. They asked me if I wanted to do all at the same time. There was no discussion of any associated health risks. I said yes to spare him another trip to their office.Trying to Sleep. Pros: Seem to care about the petsq Cons: Reckless more

Can't recommend them 11/12/2008

The vets seem competent, but they seem to do a lot of tests which you, of course, pay for. Furthermore, they are not that convenient for me to go to, and when I requested a phone-in prescription for my dog's medications (versus picking them up there), they refused, saying that I'd have to pick them up there. \r \r When I requested a few minutes of a vet's time to discuss my dog's medical condition, I waited 20 minutes before being told to make an appointment to speak to the vet.\r \r I realize that the Animal Hospital is a business, but it's also a "service" business, and their service is just not good enough to justify the additional expense and time to go out of my way.\r \r Their affiliated groomer (Beauty Meets the Beast), however is FANTASTIC! more

What Medicine? Ripoff, Unethical, Poor handling techniques of critters, Horrid Treatment/Care 10/30/2008

After weekly visits for 2 months, they had no definitive diagnosis for older puppy's skin disease. Went to Colony Park AH and they did one simple skin scrape, diagnosed demodex mites, kissed and loved on my pup and positively reinforcing good behavior in the room, who AHofC had ""difficulty"" handling, and sent her home, to me vastly improved by the next week. After 8 visits to this craptastic vet, my dog was still uncomfortable, painful, diseased and my wallet took a beating all for nothing. Also, they over-vaccinated her in puppy series, and she now will only get the Distemper vac every 3 years...I love her new vet at CPAH! The staff was so friendly, outgoing, and obviously remembered my girl and our struggle when we returned to make sure the annoying mites were subsiding to normal levels. They promote health through preventative care, nutrition and activity, not lotsa crazy prescriptiondrugs. Seek the cause, not just treat the symptoms. Made AH of Carrboro look that much lower on the totem pole of standards and ethics. My pets are better to drive 30 minutes, even for emergency, to their new vet, than a quick skip to this one and suffer disaster, poor medicine, poor service and no effective treatment. Out of 10+ hospitals I've used in the Triangle in 10 years, this one was one of the worst. Cons: Poor medicine, horrible experience more

Purrr-fect! 10/16/2008

The vets and staff here are simply amazing! They are friendly, knowledgeable, caring and trustworthy. Dr. Dorsch is approachable and thorough. I love everyone here and HIGHLY recommend them to anyone whose pet is in need of some TLC! Money well spent. more

Not Worth the Money 9/11/2008

When my rescue dog was just a two month old rambunctious and mouthy puppy, a vet here told me that it's a shame all the bad dogs get adopted, and she would support me if I decided to let her go. I was shocked, but continued to go there because it was the only vet near my home that I knew of. My most recent visit, I asked the tech if they could cut my other dog's nails, and he looked very put out and annoyed, saying they would try if there was time, and breezed out with my dog before I could explain that he got very aggressive and didn't handle nail cutting well. They didn't give me a chance to speak and because of that, someone could have been hurt and my own dog would have been to blame. On top of this, they seem to charge extremely high. The same dog needs surgery to remove extra claws, and for the back feet alone they want to charge in excess of $600, where I've heard other vets charge $200. I am currently looking into other vets, and this time, I will follow my instincts and not st more

Worst Vet Ever! 8/28/2008

I have taken my animals here multiple different times and each time was a terrible experience. The doctors are fake and money hungry. The vet techs are fresh out of school and don't know what they're doing. Sometimes the doctors just straight up lie. I am now taking my animals to the Carrboro Plaza Vet and so far I am thrilled with the attention and honesty i have encountered there. I will never again go to the Animal Hospital of Carrboro, and I may even call the better business bureau, they were that terrible. more

Excellent vet! 7/7/2008

We have taken our elderly cat here for the past four years, and they have been absolutely wonderful. The staff and vet techs all know our cat and ask after her when we go in to get supplies. Our vet (Dr. Anderson) is truly the best vet I have ever been to (I grew up with animals, so have seen many). She is fair, does *not* conduct expensive tests when it can be avoided, and considers the whole health of the animal rather than certain issues in isolation. I will say I have not been too happy with the other vets at this hospital--they are competent and good people, but do tend to over-prescribe tests and medicine. For younger animals, however, I think they would be good vets. more

Bad experience 11/9/2007

We just moved here and we took our cat to the Animal hospital and had a horrible experience. The staff seemed fake and lazy. The Vet Tech seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. And the Vet was abrasive. During the entire process we felt like we were being sold on products that they sell. After taking our new cat, which be got from a local shelter, to the plaza vet. we realized the big difference. Don't go to the animal hospt. They are over priced and just want to sell you. We recommend the Plaza vet. near Food Lion. They were awesome and really seemed to know what they were doing and told us what they were doing along the way, and they didn't try to sell us anything. more

the other familiy doctor 9/8/2006

Good basic boarding facilities with really helpful kennel staff - they are very accomodating to letting my dogs stay together in the same space too. The veterinary staff is warm and knowledgeable. I especially appreciate the doctor making a followup call the next week to make sure my doggie was feeling better. Prices seem on par for the area PROS: knowledgeable and great bedside manner CONS: boarding facility doesn't do doggie daycare more

good vets 5/24/2006

We took our pets here for quite some time and were always pleased with the service. The doctors were knowledgeable and the service was great. Everyone took a genuine interest in our pets and were able to treat them no matter what seemed to be the problem. These are great folks who will treat your pets with compassion and great care. more
