Editorial review from Citysearch 8/25/2012

Amnesia is the go-to summer outdoor spot. Great for people watching and of course, they make their own beer. Though there is a lot of outdoor seating, it's not good for families and children, it's just too packed. more

A must stop at.. 5/16/2011

not kevin king 4/18/2011

i am one of the owners of amnesia brewing and this ""rant"" by ""kevin king"" is not kevin king... he barely knows how to turn on the computer, much less access the email from where this came.. i sent david, who wrote an email to amnesia about his problem that we don't allow children at our pub-- a very detailed email back WHY we don't allow children... and, one of our employees did as well.. not a malice email, but, simply an explanatory one. to make it clear.. we do not allow minors at our bar.. have not for 7 years and will not.. it is not because of malice.. it is a choice.. because we have that in this country more

this guy is bad news 4/18/2011

Hey David,\r This is Kevin King, owner and brewer at Amnesia. First of all, how i run my business is none of your !@@@!!business. Second, get a !@!!!@#$ babysitter... Third, how many breweries did your parents take you to when you were a minor? Finally quite frankly, i really don't like children in MY BREWERY!!!!!!! CHEERS !@@@!@!!!.\r \r \r To corroborate others negative reviews of this place, I have posted an email response from the owner, responding to my question about 'why aren't kids allowed, at least during the day'. Read this, then decide if you want to support business owners who behave worse than my three year old. Citysearch wont publish profanity, but you get the picture. more

Booo! 8/18/2010

Workers seem arrogant and, well, what about the beer drinkers that have kids? Would be nice to have my child hang out and play with the dogs while us parents can enjoy a beer. I don't understand how dogs are allowed and kids aren't. Prost is the better place. Much friendlier staff, dog friendly, kid friendly,...just friendly. Owner at Amnesia is a jerk also. Head elsewhere. more

The owner drunk and aggressive 7/17/2010

I recently had a bizarre experience here. I used to drink here ever since moving to the neighborhood, but my last experience was by far the worst. I rarely feel compelled to right reviews but the actions of the owner seem borderline illegal. While looking for other reviews I found the following which is even more disturbing than my own experience. Abusive business owners need to be called out for the sake of all! Owner is horrible I used to come here fairly frequently. I loved their spicy brat with any of their delicious IPAs. No more... My wife and I were recently sitting at the bar finishing our beers, almost ready to leave. There were about 4 other people there that sunny afternoon. All of a sudden we hear someone around the corner in the back ranting about someone he'd apparently recently fired. Example phrases were ""I'm glad I fired the b*tch. She's just a f*cking c*nt."" Everybody in the place was shocked, and the waitress/bartender was clearly embarrassed. My wife got up and peered around the corner to tell whoever it was (turned out to be the owner) that everyone in the place could hear him and that he might want to keep it down a little if he was going to use such offensive words. The owner's wrath immediately turned on my wife, as he shouted at her ""This is my f*cking place and I can say whatever the f*ck I want to."" Then he yelled at her to get out and that she was 86ed from the place. As we got up to leave, after she walked out and I was headed to the door, I heard him call her a ""c*nt"" and I turned and told him calmly ""That's my wife you're talking about, and she does not deserve to be treated like that."" His (not unexpected) response was ""F*ck you, you're 86ed too. Get out of my bar."" Later, when I saw he was away, I went back in to tip the waitress. She looked horrified at what had happened and apologized. I told her it wasn't her fault and that I was just sorry she had to work for someone like that. I've never been 86ed before. I'm a nice guy, and I wouldn't be angry if I'd gotten kicked out for being a dick. I used to love this place, but I will never go back, even if we somehow get the apology we deserve. I can't support a person that treats people like that. Besides, there's PLENTY of great beer in Portland. Right up the street there's a new place, Prost! that serves awesome German beer and even better spicy brat sandwiches. Don't waste your time at Amnesia unless you're into abuse and supporting abusers. more

Beer good, service bad 6/28/2010

Well, I really want to enjoy this place, since I live nearby, and I'm glad it is not 'kid friendly', but it needs to be at least 'customer friendly' . \r \r The bartender is slow and not very friendly, no smile, or thank you and assumes your change is her tip. On a recent visit during the World Cup, there was only one bartender, no servers, so order a pitcher if you don't want to stand in line, however a pitcher always gets too warm for my liking.\r \r Another peeve, they insist on using goblets for some of their beers, and you can't get a pint glass even if you want it. If I were to return, I'd order my 'goblet' and a cold, pint glass, and then just transfer from one to the other. Ever see the movie ""5 Easy Pieces"", where Jack Nicholson just wants an order of toast, and has to order a tuna sandwich, hold the mayo, hold the lettuce, hold the tuna??\r \r They could do a lot better, if the wanted to. Pros: Desolation ale Cons: unfriendly bartender, no table service more

Great for beer, not so much for food 2/18/2010

This place has great beer, but if you are craving a wide assortment of food, go elsewhere. They are pretty limited. It's worth it though, if you just want to have a beer and a giant sausage and chill with your buddies. A hip place to be on the weekend. more

Great Beer! 12/26/2009

If you like IPA and you live in/or are near the North Portland area, Amnesia is a must! Every Pale Ale, IPA, and Brown Ale I have tried there is outstanding. A great place for a beer purist, not for music, ambience, or food necessarily. Pros: Local Feel. Excellent Product Cons: Plain Decor more

If you only want beer... 10/27/2009

I met a group of friends at this place. At first, I really liked it. The atmosphere is great, but then I went to order a drink and found that they only serve beer. Since I'm allergic, we decided to find somewhere else to chill. more

Wonderful People 9/20/2009

Nice beer, good menu, year around grilled food. Pros: Nice outside seating area, dog friendly, good beer, and food Cons: small inside eating area more

Good beer, terrible service, bad food 5/4/2009

Went here for the first time awhile ago and have been meaning to write a review. Words cannot describe how upset I was with my experience. There is a difference between ""relaxed"" and ""I don't care"" and this place is the ladder. I'm sure it would be enjoyable to just drink good beer here w/friends on the patio, but I sat at the bar and overheard a girlfriend of the bartender talking about me and how they didn't care about helping me w/my order. The food here would be delicious if I were black out drunk and needed something to stop me from dry heaving, but don't plan on eating because they might bring you a meat patty w/ sauerkraut and tell you they ran out of buns. Overall, this is the worst service I have ever been given in town. Pros: great beer worthy of ordering elsewhere Cons: truly awful service, ambiance, food more

Great local Beer 1/9/2009

Amnesia Brewing is a great small brewery in the upcoming Mississippi neighborhood. They make 2 amazing IPA's, and always have a seasonal beer to choose from. The atmosphere is laid back, housed in an old iron shop with garage doors that open up in the summertime to a large outdoor beer garden. Food is limited to local sausages and free range beef burgers grilled on a charcoal BBQ. The beers are some of the best in town, the staff is super friendly. A great neighborhood pub. No minors allowed. more

Favorite IPA, burger adn atmosphere in town. 11/14/2008

I don't know what the guy that posted on 10/19/2008 was talking about. It could be that Amnesia is on Mississippi, not Milwaukee. Or it could be that their beer is great! Either way don't listen to him. Sounds like a guy who hates his life so he spends his time writing bad reviews for places that don't treat him like royalty. \r Anyways......\r This is my favorite place in Portland. It was the first Berger I had when I moved here and I have been going back for the past seven months. Their Copacetic IPA is by far my favorite IPA in Portland. The Desolation IPA is outstanding as well and many times my counterparts and I will debate over which one is better. Their other beers are also good and I was glad to hear that they have many beers brewing for the holidays. The outside patio is great and the inside is very cool as well. The atmosphere is very relaxed and happy. You order all food and drinks at the bar which I like, cause if you need a beer you can just go get one. They have one person grilling on a BBQ right next to the patio so all the food is grilled to perfection on the spot. You can imagine if 50 people ordered a hamburger that it might take one guy a little time to make them all. So sit back, relax and enjoy the beer you are drinking. Pros: Beer, Patio, Pet Friendly more

Amnesia - wish I had it after going there 10/19/2008

The bartender got uppity and actually huffed and puffed when we couldn't decide what beers to get. We got three differet beers. ESB - tasteless, IPA - flat and tasteless, some other beer...stale, flat and tasteless. In beertown, Amnesia is going to have to step it up a bit. Being on Milwaukee and having a patio might be good enough for kids who don't know better but soon enough, they too will figure out that this place is mediocre. Pros: patio Cons: beer, attitude more

This is a real grassroots brewery with arguably the best IPA in town!! 7/30/2008

I went on a Friday night and it was very crowded..I arrived about 7pm all the outside tables were full..I was able to sit at the bar and order one of the finest IPA brews I have encountered..I then proceeded to order a burger and though the service was a little slow (remember they were completly packed) the result of the burger was phenomenal..I will go back srictly for the ""BEER&BURGER""...That is the reason we go to Brewpubs isnt it?? As I was paying my tab I realized I could get a mason jar to go!! So I ordered two to go..I highly reccomend the IPA and the amnesia expierience along with a couple of mason jars to go.. If you enjoy good beer and conversation with a very diverse and freindly crowd Amnesia is the place..Dont forget!! Pros: great BEER!! Cons: I forgot?? more

The best at what it does 6/11/2008

I go out for drinks for two things, a good beer and a nice place to enjoy in and Amnesia is the best at both. All the beers that I have tried have been beyond good and the desolation IPA may be my favorite beer ever. The space is comfortable and relaxed in its simplicity, and on a sunny day in Portland there is nowhere else I would rather be than on their patio where Mississippi creates the atmosphere for you. The food is solid and made with quality ingredients like Oregon country beef, which makes the extra dollar worth it. I normally don't write reviews, but when I saw some of the posts that had been written about my favorite brewpub I had to respond. To those posters I would like to say 1. Amnesia is all about a comfortable place to sip a brew, and I don't want your rowdy, smelly kids ruining my post-work beer. 2. When you are located on one of the most appealing streets in Portland you don't need any more than, ""a concrete slab with wooden bench tables all pushed together and covered with a tent"" and I think the forty or so people I see out there every sunny day would agree with me. 3. Every single time I have gone the service has been friendly and as quick as is reasonable for how busy they are. If you aren't willing to stand in line for a couple of minutes to get the best beer in Portland, than go back to the Pearl, you don't deserve it. To sum up, Amnesia has the best IPAs in Portland, a comfortable atmosphere, and solid food. If you want kids, an overdone atmosphere, and are too lazy to get off your butt for a beer, go to a McMenamin's. Pros: Beer, atmosphere Cons: Crowded on nice days more

Who opens a non-kid friendly brewpub in portland these day??? 5/25/2008

Why would you open neighborhood pub in a kid-friendly neighborhood and have it be dogs only? It doesn't make sense to me. more

Keep Buying Beer, but Not Worth Trip to Brewery 5/17/2008

Amnesia has one of my favorite IPA's of all time! Now with that said, I wanted to go to the brewery and feel the vibe of sitting on the patio enjoying the nice weather and drinking one of my favorites. I soon realized that the patio was a concrete slab with wooden bench tables all pushed together and covered with a tent. It made me immediately think I should have picked up a six pack of instead. No service was available outside and we had to go inside and stand in line at the make shift bar counter for a pitcher. We were hungry and saw the $8 Hamburger. Again I was wishing I would have bbq'ed at home instead. This is definately a brewery and no more. You can get some beer, that is if the have it available, in which most were sold out, and kick back on a patio slab under the tent, if that's your thing, or you can pick up this tasty beverage elsewhere and enjoy it where you please. In case you were wondering about the Hamburger, I wouldn't bother! Pros: Great IPA more
