A Special Place! 5/1/2007

Ammo is wonderful. The food is great. The drinks are great. It's just a great place to eat. One time I had a steak special there, it was a filet stuffed with cheese and it was tasty. This place is a bit on the pricey side but well worth it. One time I noticed that the chef was doing a food pairing for a couple. That looked fantastic! I bet they knew the chef. more

Fantastic Fare, Great Service, Tasty Bits... 2/28/2007

Simply put: fantastic fare and experience at AMMO. I found the staff quick and helpful at lunch, and the food was very tasty. The lemonade is a must, no doubt. My starter salad fit the climate: fresh and light. Even though my Ahi was slightly overcooked, it was still amazing. The flavors worked well together without excessive competition. I would highly recommend AMMO - at least for lunch - to those who want a fantastic meal in an otherwise bleak LA culinary lunch landscape. Pros: Great food and service, cool atmosphere, wide and deep menu Cons: Parking (meters only?), Right on major street (Highland) more

CLEAN food 10/29/2006

You really get a stripped down minimalist vibe at Ammo - everything seems to qualify as fresh comfort food, there aren't too many fussy overthought items on the menu here. You won't find some gussied up terrine of this or that - just a big fragrant bowl of brown rice with tofu and vegetables (tastier than it sounds), or some wonderful turkey meatloaf that is loads better than what mum used to serve (sorry mum). I love their lemonade the best, and wish they'd simply leave you a pitcher at the table! They have a great espresso machine in the back, I always try to have some sort of coffee drink at the end of the meal because what will come out seems very Italian, classic and simple. Pros: Unending glasses of lemonade, classic comfort food, tasty brownies Cons: Cramped dining room with bad acoustics, busy Highland Blvd makes it hard to sit outside as well more

one of my faves 9/15/2006

The food is very fresh and unadorned. they let the ingredients speak for themselves. nice service. reminds me of a San Francisco place. relaxed, urban bistro. Pros: easy to park, good food Cons: not cheap more

Skip the meal, order dessert! 2/14/2006

I went to Ammo to review it for another site (which shall remain nameless), and I found the food to be mediocre, the service to be unimpressive and the ambiance non-existant (although overhearing the conversation at the table next to me was amusing). However, I was pleasantly surprised in one area. The flourless chocolate cake. Normally, if I'm reviewing a place, I'll only order flourless chocolate cake because it's almost impossible to make well and I'm a sadist. Here, the cake was DIVINE. It was perfect - not too chalky, not too gooey, not to sweet. Fabulous. The coffee's good too.. Skip the middle-of-the-road, overpriced food and go straight for that wonderful cake. You'll be glad you did. Cons: bad parking, crowded dining room more

going downhill? I hope not. 7/27/2005

My husband and I have been going to Ammo for the last few years whenever we feel like having a great meal in a nice atmosphere and we are prepared to pay a little extra for great service. The last two times we've eaten there, however, we received terrible service. Like another reviewer we were seated at a terrible table right next to the kitchen where I had an unimpeded view of the food prep area. When we asked to be moved the wait person was rude about it and service was terrible throughout the remainder of the evening. One bad experience and I wouldn't be writing a review but the exact same thing happened the last time. There were several open tables when we arrived and we had made a reservation, albeit earlier the same day. It has always been my feeling you give the best tables away first! Pros: food, wine list, chocolate souffle! Cons: slow service more

Not bad, but not great 4/28/2005

Ammo looks okay once you walk in, and it could have been an excellent evening, but the stars must have been misaligned for me and my friend. It took us about 45 minutes and three or four misses to find a bottle of wine that was in stock. Service was lackadaisical -- completely unavailable when we needed it, and then suddenly attentive at the worst possible moments. The food was generally good -- the pork chop with glazed fuji apples was nice, and the sauce was excellent, but the appetizer was charred and dissatisfying. We made reservations the same day and were seated promptly, but had to sit in a corner table by the kitchen and had to share our conversation with the men at the next table over. Pros: Atmosphere, Wine (once it comes), Entree Cons: Service, Value, Appetizer more

Good, Not Great 1/27/2005

Ate there for Sunday brunch, so eventhough we ate outside (as we had our dog with us), we weren't bombarded w/ traffic noise (not too many cars on a Sunday). The tables are a bit cramped though, but we didn't really mind, as it made for good conversations w/ neighbors. The food was ok, but wasn't what I expected from a much-talked about chef (maybe he's just really hot... too bad we didn't get a glimpse!!). Prices were moderate (avg. breakfast item $11); service was good though a bit lagging. Pros: Reasonable Prices, Nice Interior Decor, Hot Chef Cons: Cramped more

The Turkey Meatloaf 7/30/2003

will melt in your mouth! It's the best thing on the menu and yo'll never want to order another thing. Pros: Great Food, Cool Ambiance Cons: Pricey, No Parking, Crowded more

EXPENSIVE FOR ($$) RATING!! 3/4/2003

I read the review of this location on Citysearch and took the $$ rating to mean that it would cost $20-30 per person to eat dinner. In fact, it was $20+ per entree and $10-16 for an appetizer. Let's put it this way: we were four people who each had a salad and a main course and two glasses of wine. The total was $70 PER PERSON. Pros: Good Food, Not Crowded Cons: Expensive, No Valet, Location more

Good Fuel For Thoughts 1/21/2003

Their tag line, ""Fuel for Thoughts"" is accurate! Their food is delicious and unique. Their staff is friendly and polite. We had the herb chicken with sweet potatoes and it was YUMMY. Great spot for a quick and healthy lunch. more

Great desserts! 12/21/2002

We stopped here after the theater one Friday night for dessert and coffee. The staff were very welcoming and friendly - despite our just wanting dessert! The dessert list included about five different items, all of which sounded great. We opted for the chocolate fondant cake (which was baked to order) and the ice cream sandwich (which is an Ammo staple). Both were incredibly good. The coffee and cappuccino were very tasty and they also had a good selection of afterdinner wines and liqueurs. We definitely want to give this place another try for dinner and/or lunch. This place is a great find in a quiet block in Hollywood. Pros: Service, Food, Decor Cons: Size of dining room, Neighborhood more

AMMO ""Loaded with great food"" 8/14/2002

This is one of my favorite sunday brunch hangouts. We have been going here for over a year and the food is always consistantly great! The staff is friendly and efficient. Lots of Celebs, No Attitude. Pros: Organic Food, Friendly Staff, No Attitude Cons: Gets crowded, Small Dining Area more

Hollywood Hot Spot 6/3/2002

Minimalist decor with maximum flavor, Ammo is one of Hollywood's best lunch options. Savory meatloaf is practically ""wet"" with fresh tomato and herbs, and their ""favorite brown rice"", served with chicken or tofu, is also mixed up with asapagus tips, tomoatos, brocoli and other fresh fixin's. You won't leave craving anything else but another stop here for lunch or dinner. Close to Pantages theatre (short drive) and Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Pros: Fresh, Tasty, lunch delivery Cons: Loud at lunch more

Good lunch spot 6/2/2002

There are few health-oriented restaurants in Hollywood--thankfully Ammo fills the void. Though it can get pricey, the meals are consistently tasty and perfect for dining with picky, vegetarian companions. One tip: If you're going for lunch, get there early, by 12:30 or so, the wait can be lengthy. Pros: turkey burger, french fries, salad Cons: expensive, crowded, no parking more
