Terrible food, dirty old decor 1/9/2012

The seats are rickety and really uncomfortable. I'm a small girl, but when I sat down I was afraid the chair was going to colapse. The bread that was brought to our table was delicious. It was crusty and soft on the inside. Sadly, this was the highlight of the meal. We started with the mushroom crostinis ($6). They basically consisted of a tiny slice of bread with some kind of mushroom puree on top and a dusting of powdery parmazean. They were not warm like the menu indicated. They were cold, tasteless, and pretty gross. (There is a picture of them uploaded.) The salad that came with our entrees was fine. It was just iceberg with about two each of tomatoes and cucumbers. It was heavily dressed. \r \r Our entrees were lazagna with meat sauce ($16.50) and the chicken botticelli ($18.50) which the menu said was a chicken breast in a creamy sauce with prosciutto and provalone. If that was prociutto, I'm Princess Beatrice. It was lunch meat from the grocery store. This was a terrible dish. The cream sauce had no real flavor and was very runny. There was a side of fetticini noodles mixed with maranara. The maranara had a really weird flavor I couldn't place. It was too sweet and lacked seasoning. The lazagna was really flat and was basically a layer of noodles, some ricotta, then another layer of noodlles with meat sauce poured on top. It wasn't really lazagna. The sauce had that same sweet flavor. It was the biggest disapointment after the crostinis. \r \r We decided to try the homemade chocolate coconut ice cream ($4)that was on the special board in front. It was delicious. The chocolate flavor was subtle and the coconut gave it some nice texture. The service was good, although a little slow at times. Our bill came to $50 and the Groupon saved us $20. So after tip, it was $40, which I thought was overpriced for the quality of food. Save your money and go to Italian Gardens or Iaria's. more

Will never eat here again 12/28/2011

There were really no redeeming qualities about this place - the decor was hideous and the restaurant did not seem super clean. The chairs were rickety and uncomfortable and the food was pretty bad - bad house wine, crunchy, hard bread, iceberg lettuce with one grape tomato drowning in balsamic vinegar, dry chicken with bits of unmelted gorgonzola cheese, spaghetti with chef boyardee-like marinara and below average penne (advertised as ""diavolo"" but it was not red or spicy). I suppose the server was sort of nice... more

Cool little place with great service and good food. 1/29/2010

Went for the first time and was surprised to be the only table for a while last night. The decor is odd but that makes it cool. Our server was friendly and on top of it without being intrusive. We ordered beer and cocktails (which were NICE!) and two different dishes at our servers recommendation. Both were delicious and huge. Way too much food. The marinara sauce was great and different than anything else I have ever tasted. Couldn't do dessert but were very tempted as they have homemade gelato - and I guess they make different kinds every once in a while. The bill was a little pricey but we knew it was going to be so we were prepared. Basically we spent $60 for the two of us but we left paying $100 because the server deserved it. I will definitely go back. Pros: Service, quality and they will make whatver you want if they Cons: Little pricey more

Overpriced and Below Average 12/20/2009

When you walk into Amici's its very easy to be seduced by the unique decor and generally friendly service. However, one bite into your food and you will regret ever eating there. I've been there three times now and everytime I curse myself for forgetting how bad it was. First, the food is overpriced. Iaria's, which is close has better food at a cheaper price. I would even argue that Olive Garden has better food. My girlfriend and I both ordered cream-based dishes and both were too thick and overpowering, covering up anything else. The other thing that bothers me about Amici's is that at $16/avg entree they give you powdered, in-a-can parmesean cheese, as opposed to the grated kind. I would expect that at Olive Garden, but not for $16/plate. Pros: Service Cons: Food more

Gross - Board of Health Violations are Warranted 11/11/2009

Unclean prep area in my view - no gloves on food prep employees - poor quality food at high prices and junky wobbly tables and chairs. Wish I had checked the board of health site BEFORE dining there. They have numerous (4 just in 2009) violation reports, each with 5-8 violations. Pros: Server was terrific Cons: Unsanitary, poor quality food and prep more

Don't eat here!!! 9/27/2009

Stay away, stay very far away. OMG, I don’t know how this place can stay in business another day. An absolute horrible dining experience to say the least. This has to be the worst restaurant in Indy, hands down. The local Lockerbie residents must support this mess, because if it were anywhere else, it would be closed. Cons: Just overall disgusting more

great italian food at reasonable prices 3/18/2009

What a great place to try eclectic italian food or just some good old traditional italian food. try the new beer garden out back , lavender and lilac bushes attract butterflies all summer and fall. great place to take a date and close to everything, fantastic food , great ambiance. We love L. A but we love Amici's too. Pros: best service, best italian lovely setting Cons: cant think of any more

If you want undercooked and microwaved chicken, slow service, and a rude waitress/owner, this is the restaurant for you!!! 3/9/2009

If you want undercooked and microwaved chicken, slow service, and a rude waitress/owner, this is the restaurant for you!!!\r \r Four of us ordered food. Took 5 minutes to make drink orders, 20 minutes to get the drinks (glasses of wine.), 15 minutes for her to come back to take our orders, 20 more minutes for the food to arrive, and then the food was terrible. $18 average per order, and in a seafood chicken Alfredo, there was 3-4 shrimp, and one or two scallops. Chicken Parm. as well as another Chicken dish, the chicken was undercooked and pink in the middle, as well as the texture of the chicken had shown it was obviously microwaved.\r \r One of the persons whom ordered food also had a few hairs in her Seafood pasta dish. Being Italian, this was an atrocious restaurant. The next day, we contacted the Department of Health, as well as the Better Business B. to resolve a full refund sense the owner thought ""paying for our drinks"" would resolve the food. I'd have much rather paid for the wine, as it was okay. Pros: I wish I could think of some. Cons: My review states it all... more

Poor, poor, poor 1/26/2009

I was taking my mother on a girls night - and we went to the Lion King after this horrible experiece known as Amici's. I had heard good things about this restaurant throughout the years, however, if I could remember who said these ""good"" things I would most certainly hunt them down and make them pay for my outrageous bill. I was lured in by the cute little house and darling curb appeal. . .to only find a seat upstairs in this freazing, ice cold room that had the worst lighting ever. Don't get me started on the huge cracks in the walls that we were quite afraid would give away at any moment. The service was terribly slow, but I kept my hopes up that when the food arrived life would be grand. I am sorry to say it was the total opposite. We both ordered a chicken parmesan dish and could not believe how rubbery, cold and tastless the chicken was, I could hardly cut it with my knife. . and the sauce was horrible. Very tasteless, cold and small portions. I can not believe this place is still in business more importantly that there is even ONE good comment about them on this website. I was quite disappointed to say the least. If you want REALLY GOOD italian I recommend going to Salvatores. It is at 86th and Ditch. I just had my son's rehersal dinner there and couldn't belive how good it was. Pros: Cute curb appeal Cons: Way to expensive, horrible service, horrible food. . . . more

Overrated, over priced, undeserving of its reputation 10/22/2008

I went to this restaurant because it received so many positive reviews, and it's in a very cute building. It totally drew us in with its curb appeal and we were very excited to try this place. It must have been amateur night in the kitchen the evening we decided to dine there. At the recommendation of our server, I ordered the vegetable lasagna. It was better suited for a school cafeteria. It was very unappetizing, and tasteless. I couldn't even pawn it off on my boyfriend, and he is very good about eating my unwanted leftovers. My boyfriend ordered a cheese calzone, which he described as a ""tasteless mess."" I am inclined to agree, as I sampled it myself. All of this is bad enough, but the prices were outrageous ($$$), especially considering the quality of food. If you're in the area, Iaria's is much better, or the Milano Inn... or even Fazolis (where at least the price reflects the quality). Pros: Atmosphere, wait staff Cons: Food, prices more

To die for!! Yummo! 9/18/2008

Oh my gosh! I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Amici's! My husband and I have been going there since we were dating, and our kids love it, too! The mushroom crostini is out of this world, and the shrimp diavlo is wonderful!! Love those capers, shrimp, brocolli, and pieces of garlic!! I've tried dishes like this at other fancy shmancy restaurants and have been sorely disappointed, as no one makes shrimp diavlo like Amici's!! Pros: Friendly Service, Value, Funky Atmosphere, Awesome Menu Items Cons: avoid the ""patio"" more

Wonderful! 6/20/2008

I love this old little place! A couple years ago my birthday was on Super bowl Sunday! Since Amici's is not a sports bar they had no reservations but ours. Instead of calling us and canceling, they opened and greeted us like family! We were the only customers that evening. I love the lasagna, salad and bread. We go to Amici's often and have never been disappointed. The past reviews are old and do not reflect this great place. more

Poor food. 10/26/2006

Like other reviews said very little sauce and no taste at all to food. Small portions. One of the worse Italian restaurants I've been to in a while. Small bowl of pasta for $15+. I do not recommend and I will not go back. I was there last night. 10/27/06\r \r Only good thing to say is we had a good waiter and nice atmosphere Pros: Good waiter and good atmosphere Cons: Poor food, small portions, over priced. more

Do Not Eat Here! 11/25/2005

I originally ate here some years back. I remember generous portions, rich sauce, and really hearty food. I just ate there tonight and the first thing when I got home was to get on here and write how bad it was on as many review site as possible. Let me say one good thing about this place before I give my negative opinion 1) it is a cool old place. I ordered linguine and Italian sausage it cost about $15.00. It did not have hardly any sauce on it, there was no garlic taste at all none. The two sausages were cooked to long and the portion very small. I never was asked for a refill of my wine. There was not a salt and pepper shaker at any of the tables upstairs. No fresh parmesan cheese was offered for the plate. So small portion +no garlic+no sauce+no taste= $15.00 Cons: poor cooking, small portions, no garlic more

My favorite in Indy 11/21/2005

Moved here a year ago, struggling to find restaurants I like that don't rhyme with Mapplebee's. I love Amici's. Fantastic atmosphere, better food. Because of it, the business is now a client of mine. The Indy italian stop for Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock, Amici's is the primary caterer for my concert events in town. Carole King has said their food is the best she has had on the road, period. Says a lot. Other acts include the White Stripes, Gov't Mule, Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights, Nickel Creek, John Legend and will be many others. Highly recommended. Pros: quality, atmosphere, price Cons: none, none, none more
