Worst

In my last visit to Amelia's Kitchen most things were as expected - good, reliable Italian food in a pleasant small setting. Still, service was beyond unacceptable. I had to wait...

keep the pizza, get a new owner! 4/15/2010

My girlfriend and I ate a late lunch at Amelia's kitchen in west sommerville. The weather was perfect so we decided to go for a walk. We noticed earlier in the day that someone was actually sweeping and cleaning up the front sidewalk of the restaurant, so we thought...wow! If they care so much about the sidewalk, they must care equally to the service and food, right? WRONG! We were served by a waiter that had a cell phone that kept ringing and complaining about being there on his day off with the cook. They had a great special yesterday that was a personal pizza and soda FOR 5 BUCKS!!! The pizza was delicious and we loved the fact that someone was offering a great pizza at a decent price (being that TUFT University is literally 4 blocks away ) our food came out on time and hot. Once the owner came in and he started swearing and bragging about how he was going to fire his server once he came in. He probably said the word bull s**t at least 6 times while we were there. We felt very uncomfortable, so we asked for bill and left. Bottom line, these days, I would think that restaurant need to go out of thier way to offer a great product, great service at a good price to get more people to come in and spend thier hard earned money. Lets not even talk about the fact that you have to walk through the kitchen to use the restroom (which looked like a scene out of a devils rejects movie decorated with plastic floweres) and hand sink only had cold water. Next time I will order the pizza to go and not have to deal with rude owners and waiters. Pros: location, grea food specials, perfect for students on a budg Cons: the owners attitude & language, rude service staff more

Over rated, over priced, inconsistent, and intimidating owner 3/5/2009

This restaurant owner turns over waitstaff like that's his only job. He has forced out some of the the best waitresses there I've had in just a few months. One waitress told me there's been about twenty waitresses lost in about two months. I just assume he's the one who has forced out most of them because of his overall dimeanor, the way he treats them, and lack of sensibility in helping out. I've sat there waiting for a to-go order while the waitress ran around doing a million things and he sat there on the phone. He berates his employees in front of customers too. I actually ran into one of the best waitresses there I've had, who no longer works there (surprise surprise) and she just told me that her checks from the restaurant bounced. That she was actually paid in BAD checks! That's terrible. Not only is it going to go out of business soon, it's a such a small establishment you would think the owner would learn to make the room more comfortable for all the customers. I've seen him actually lecture other adults on leaving something behind at the restaurant. He is just plain rude. I've been there a total of three times to witness all of this, and I will not be returning ever again. The food and atmosphere are just not worth supporting this guy's terrible mismanagement and behavior. I'd rather walk the extra mile to the next italian joint. Pros: Traditional italian cuisine Cons: Mismanaged more

My Favorite small Italian place 6/11/2008

I have had nothing but positive experiences at Amelia's Kitchen. The wait staff are very nice. The food is great too. I usually go at lunch time because the lunch menu is great. Hands down this place has great Italian food and the pizza is fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant, ignore the negative reviews and try it out your self. Pros: Excellent service, great Pizza and lunch items Cons: Parking can be tough but its worth it more

horrible people mediocre food 10/23/2007

The owner is cranky and rude, the food is just mediocre and overpriced. I would eat here occassionally if it weren't for the horrible atmosphere and abusive owner. Never again. Pros: food is ok, restaurant is small so wait service is good Cons: not a lot of parking, just have to find a meter, horrible owner, ambience more

Make sure read before visiting... 10/19/2007

I recently visited Amelias with my girlfriend, we were first put off by being greeted by a rude man, who later turns out to be the owner. The food was not bad, it was just nothing to speak off, and when venturing through the kitchen to get to the men's room, I did not feel so right having just eaten what I did after seeing the kitchen. I am sticking to my Anthony's in downtown for my authentic italian fod. Pros: Decent pizza Cons: Rude owner, walk through kitchen to get to unisex room more

Great neighborhood spot! 10/9/2007

The food was authentic homemade style and the service was very friendly. Their pies are out of this world! Ignore the earlier negative reviews and go check it out for yourself! Pros: the pies are to die for! Cons: none! more

Great experience - Good Food, Good Service and Friendly atmosphere 7/26/2007

I bought a $25 Entertainment coupon and was a bit concerned after reading some of the prior reviews. Our experience was the exact opposite of some recent reviewers. The waitress was friendly, the service was prompt and the food was good. We identified that we had a coupon when we ordered drinks and she immeidately told us that the $35 minimum applies to entrees only. There were three of us,so meeting the $35 minimum was no problem. We ordered the calamari appetizer and it was the most tender we have ever had. From the conversations going on around us, it was obvious that most patrons are regulars. The appetizer was delivered to our table hot and in less than 10 minutes. Our main courses came out about 15 minutes later. Again they were freshly cooked, hot, and very good. The cook came and asked us if everything was okay. There was only one waitress. She was serving five tables so she was busy. But she was friendly, prompt, and attentative. Pros: Service, Food, Ambience Cons: Nothing about the restaurant itself - on-street parking (hey! this is Boston.) more

DO NOT GO HERE! 7/20/2007

DO NOT GO HERE! I did not enjoy my experience here. When I went there was only one waitress for the entire place. The service was extremely slow and on top of that they ""forgot"" to tell us that they were out of our order so we had to wait an additional half an hour to get our food. Meanwhile the manager/ owner was wandering around ignoring everyone. They clearly do not get the meaning of customer service. Once we got our food it was boring and bland, not really much better than a chain food restaurant for a supposedly homemade Italian meal. I couldn't agree with the other reviewer more. If you want amazing Italian food in Somerville go to Lil Vinny's on Medford street. Their service is superb as well! Cons: poor customer service, boring food more

WORST. RESTAURANT. EVER. 7/19/2007

This place is awful. They had one poor waitress trying to cover the whole restaurant...which was obviously too much for one person. I think their tactic is to make the customers feel sorry for her. The owner was present, but didn't bother to help her or even address any of the four tables of unsatisfied customers that we saw. \r \r The chicken parm was the worst I have ever had - I actually couldnt eat it! The chicken was dried out and tasted like it had been frozen and thawed several times over. The pasta sauce was little more than ketchup. The diet coke was flat. They brought out the wrong entree for my boyfriend and apparently made the same mistake with the couple sitting next to us. Being only one waitress, it was several minutes before we could get her attention to correct the order. As we were waiting (an eternity) to pay the bill,we saw several people try to use coupons and they were being denied for various reasons. \r \r I eat out all the time in Cambridge and Somerville and this is singularly the worst dining experience ive had. Cons: Rude, inconsiderate owner who doesnt care about his customers, food quality is awful more

Overpriced, Bland, Stubborn 7/19/2007

We had a similar experience to the other reviewer that tried bringing in a coupon. They imposed a bizarre coupon policy that the combined price of our entrees had to exceed $35. It wouldn't matter if we ordered 20 appetizers, the *entrees* had to exceed $35. Since nearly every entree on the menu was under $17, it was frustrating, to say the least. So we reluctantly chose two entrees from our highly restricted options, only to be told, about a half-hour later that they ran out of one of them. Despite the fact that they ran out, the owner wouldn't relax his restrictions.\r \r The other reviewer was right to say they are sloooooooooooow. It took forever for our meals to finally arrive. When they finally did arrive, the portions were small and the food was pretty bland. A box of Kraft Mac & Cheese would have had more kick. For that price, I expected something better tasting, or at least more of it.\r \r If you want good Italian food in Somerville, go to Vinny's at Night or Lil' Vinny's, but stay away from Amelias.\r Pros: Ambience Cons: Food, Value, Ownership more

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK USERS-avoid Amelia's Kitchen 9/8/2006

Attention ENTERTAINMENT coupon users: Went to Amelia's because of the $10.00 off coupon. I ordered Fettucine Mamma under pastas and my husband ordered chicken parm. under entrees. Both meals were so-so. They refused to honor the coupon because I ordered something under the pasta heading...both meals had to be under entree heading. The meals were $14.00 each. When I tried to speak to the owner, he got on his cellphone and walked away from me into the kitchen...never to be seen again. It's a SCAM! We will never return. The owner knew what I wanted to talk to him about because the waitress had informed him. more

Saturday Brunch 7/22/2004

I've been twice for Saturday brunch, and found both experiences enjoyable. The food was tastey and the server was very pleasant. The coffee was excellent. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all. Pros: good coffee, good service, no crowds more

Pricey and SLOW 5/14/2003

In my last visit to Amelia's Kitchen most things were as expected - good, reliable Italian food in a pleasant small setting. Still, service was beyond unacceptable. I had to wait for an hour to get my main course - and there were merely six other diners at the restaurant. Never mind that, the salad took 35 minutes to arrive - and it was greens with cheese. This is getting worse when you leave $40 for two people - salad was shared, coke (NO FREE REFILLS) and two main courses. No wine, no desert - EXPENSIVE. Until they shape up - and I am not going to try for a while, go someplace else. Pros: Food is OK Cons: Very slow service more

Canned Mushrooms 11/27/2002

We tried pizza here because it got in the top 10 of the 2002 user ratings. This is supposed to be a specialty Italian restaurant and they used canned mushrooms! The sauce and crust of the pizza were not that great either. I don't understand how this pizza could possibly have gotten in the top 10. more

awesome local italian 8/10/2002

I, too, have watched Amelia's change from a local hole-in-the-wall, slice of pizza place, to a more polished restaurant. However, the change is almost all for the better. The food is spectacular, especially the foccaccia, which is some of my favorite, anywhere. As part of their changes, they now have wait staff. I'm not entirely sure if that's a good change, as they're frequently not the best. I'd say that's the weakest part of the whole Amelia's experience. If you're debating between this location and the one in Cambridge, go here. It's light-years better! Pros: great food, reasonable prices Cons: lacking wait staff more

Nice Neighborhood Restaurant 7/29/2002

Located in Teele Square, this restaurant provides tasty thin crust pizza and pasta dishes. Good quality at good prices. more
