Fantasgreat Local Burger Joint 10/5/2008

Don't waste your money on another Burger King or In-N-Out go some place memorable and different. That's Al's Big Burger. The Malts, Fried Zucchini, tasty variations on burgers... COME ON! Maybe it won't alter your preception of reality but it will definitely give you a little extra drive to check out small burger stands more often.\r \r Google my blog ""freaking delicious"" to find a little video I put together on the place. It will show you the joint, the food, and give you a little inside info. Pros: Burgers, Local, Tasty, Fun Cons: Not home made fries and the like. more

BEST BURGER PLACE IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD 7/11/2008

They have the best burgers in the world! Best quality beef and they use mesquite charcoal, which is the best stuff to grill the patties with! Al's is a very homey diner and they have excellent service! The workers are nice and always serve you right away! Try their swiss bacon cheese burgers! Also their clams and fries are the best! Also order there special milkshake: PEANUT BUTTER FLAVOR! They also have fresh chicken breast burger! Great for family dinner! GO THERE IT'S THE BEST PLACE!!!!!!!!!\r Pros: Get the chicken breast burger or the 1/3lb bacon cheeseburger!!!!! Cons: early closing, sundays close, holidays closed more

Bay Area's Finest, No Nonsense 3/9/2008

I've been going to Al's since I moved to the greater Bay Area, and have never encountered a better burger. Period. The folks at this tiny stand have narrowed the humble burger to what it really should be. They need no gimmicks, and while their selection may seem a little limited compared to the upscale places like Barney's, this allows them to focus on what they do best. That said, if a true burger isn't really what you're craving, or if you want a little more, they've got it for you. Huge, thick shakes, mozzarella sticks, fries galore, and a fantastic charcoal grill right in front of you, so you know exactly what happens to your food, start to finish. Their standard is a 1/3 pounder, in my opinion the perfect patty, but they'll do double that or half that much, with fresh fixin's and a perfectly toasted bun. Their prices are phenomenal. A $10 bill should deal with any appetite. If you get the chance, drop in and chow down, you won't be disappointed. Pros: Quality, Price, Cons: Seating more

Worst service 7/30/2007

I won't be going back. \r \r My daughter and I walked in at exactly 8pm and the counter person said ""Sorry, we can't cook for you."" The tables were full of people that were seated and eating; we simply wanted a burger to go. I mentioned that we would not be dining in, that people would probably be seated at the tables long after we left with our to-go food, please could they just fry up a burger really quick? The answer - ""sorry, my boss's rules."" We had done nothing wrong other than walk in at the exact minute of closing. Customers at their tables and in the parking lot gave us sympathetic looks as if to say ""if it was my place I would have made you a quick burger.""\r \r Well, FU ""Al's"". I'm happy to never go there again. Try Oscar's in Berkeley, they respect the customer.\r \r Cons: greasy, ancient, rude more

Great Burger in Greasy hut. 11/7/2006

The place has the best burgers I have tried so far in the Bay Area. \r \r It's a couple knotches over Sliders. Much better than Clown Alley, In N Out, and Bistro Burger (Though I enjoy all of these too). And Nation's Giant Burger doesn't even get close to being in the same category.\r \r The burgers are grilled over a flame (as they should be). The prices are that Bay Area Normal $6 average. The fries are pretty good and the Chocolate shakes are great. Pros: Burgers, Shakes, Very Friendly Cons: Very little seating, Looks like the place has not been remodeled since opening (1960's?) more

Brings back Fond Memories 8/8/2002

Al's just brings back that memory of when my Uncle took me to a Chicago Cubs game and the burger joint that was near it. Finally! A great grilled burger with the best cripy ruffled fries. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of eating my tender and juicy turkey burger and you can actually watch them cook your burger on that big black grill. The service was one of the best ever. It might not look like much but definitely a Diamond in the Ruf! If you in Albany and going down SanPablo Ave. just roll down your window and follow the aroma of Al's Grilled Burger! Pros: Top Service, Best Burgers, Great Fries Cons: Shack more
