Best

We go to Aloha Sushi all the time, best sushi rolls in town, they have deals every night. The new bar and cabana looks great!!! Keep up the good work.

Worst

Aftertaste 1/30/2011

The evening started good. The hostess was pleasant, took our Groupon coupon and seated us inside due to the chill that evening; limited indoor seating, but the patio is attractive given good weather. The server was also attentive initially. As the restaurant filled to include waiting guests she became less and less personable. At her suggestion, I ordered a small ""hand wrap"" while my wife completed her meal. We waited, waited, waited and finally she arrived with my small sushi; my wife had long since finished. Shortly there after the bill was presented. A glass of not inexpensive wine had been added to the bill and the Groupon credit was not deducted. The waitress claimed she did not have a Groupon coupon, but would adjust the bill for the wine. Upon her return with the adjusted bill she had found the Groupon and all appeared well. I paid with cash and waited for my change for at least 20 minutes. Once I got her attention she did return my change. I got a strong impression she was going to pocket the $40.00 Groupon, serve herself or a friend the glass of wine, and keep all the change from the bill. I would say unethical at best. The food was the high point, attractive-fresh-generous, and well prepared. Unfortunately, the food does not compensate for questionable employees and poor service. more

HORRIBLE 1/17/2011

Used a groupon and read the reviews ... but the reviews were unreliable or maybe there is a new owner or maybe that is why they did the Groupon deal (but I am glad that I only bought one). The hostess was nice, but she was ditsy and clueless, when we gave her our information apparently she didn't write our name down, just our party number and my cell number, but didn't ask for our name (odd). Then 1 hour later we were seated in the Cabana, and the hostess didn't give us menus, give us utensils or napkins and didn't tell the waitress that we were there (we were the last cabana. We waited for 20+ minutes until someone came and found out that the hostess didn't tell the waitress that we were there (according to the waitress). So we order, and the waitress brought the ginger and sesame seeds were ordered but didn't bring chopsticks or fork to eat them with. STUPID! So we waited 5 minutes and then had to go get someone. Waited 30+ minutes for our sushi to and, by the time they served it, cold tempura which we sent back because it was cold and soggy. Sake was horrible and cheap quality!! The sushi was made with old fish and tons of rice (I couldn't eat one of the rolls because it tasted so fishy and yellow tail is not supposed to taste fishy!). WILL NEVER COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Good plates but a sushi rip-off 7/25/2008

I've been here at least ten times and while the plates are some of the best deals you can get in town the sushi is horribly overpriced for the amount of food you actually get. Plan on spending at least $25 for sushi rolls to even get full--and I'm a petite girl with a normal appetite! While I give them points for creativity and ambience, I can't help but feel a little foolish paying so much for so little. I also noticed they cut their rolls with a lot of fake crab so this is the first place I've tried to make a spicy scallop roll with a mixture of mostly fake crab dotted with the occasional scallop. The nigiris are even worse as they are sliced like sheets of vellum and priced like Sushi Ota's. Take my word and stick to their spare rib plate and spam musubi. Pros: Great Hawaiian plates Cons: Horribly overpriced under-quality sushi more

TOO MUCH MONEY FOR SUCH LITTLE WIMPY PICES OF SUSHI 6/19/2008

We have been to 30! sushi restaurants in the area, and NEVER have we seen such thin, small pieces of sushi ! Especially for such a large dollar amount! It would make sense if it was $1 per sushi, for the small amount would make dollar sense, but this restuarant is STRICTLY handing out paper thin sushi in order to cover their bills,...........thats too bad, for it will never bring back a customer! or any referrals..... more

Never Again 7/6/2007

WORST SERVICE EVER! I've never experienced such horrible service. We came and waited until it was at their convenience to clean the tables so we could be seated. It took about 20 minutes to get our drinks. food was not worth waiting for an hour; it was incredibly slow to a point where i saw two couples get seated at the bar, and finish their meal before we were halfway done with ours. They tried charging us a gratuity charge, sure we had a party of 6 or more, but it was most definitely not worth 18% gratuity (and i'm generally really polite and generous with gratuity). After we expressed our concerns with the manager, he got quite defensive saying that the food takes time to prepare - he would know since he's one of the chefs, he began comparing his restaurant to fast food restaurants, and the other local restaurants. If he wants to compare his restaurant to a fast food restaurant, be my guest. When I spoke, he spoke over me! He was most definitely disrespectful, rude, and the most unprofessional manager I have ever met. My evening was ruined, as well as my time in La Jolla for the weekend. Two words for Aloha Sushi - never again. more
