Solid, like it's other 2 restaurants 8/14/2007

I thought I was in Japan. Everything they served was authentic to taste. Pros: If you are looking for authentic Japanese Izakaya food, here you have it. Cons: Can't really think of one. more

Very enjoyable 8/3/2007

This is a wonderful little place. It is not exactly authentic, but somehow it does make you feel like you have been transported to Japan for the evening. The plates are small and the food is very tasty. The prices are reasonable, so long as you don't expect to leave stuffed. Try the grilled items. I don't think I had anything there I didn't like. The food isn't so great that I would recommend coming here again and again, but try it once. more

Authentic Japanese Gem 6/20/2007

This restaurant has truly great food and is frequent by tons of Japanese people, a sure sign that this place must be authentic. The dishes are portioned and priced much like tapas so one dish just won't cut it. I would probably order 2-3 dishes per person given your appetite. I had really great handmade tofu here, great ramen noodles, and tons of other dishes I can't remember now. They barely squeezed us in on a Tuesday night without reservations. So, I would recommend making some or calling the restaurant if you're traveling to get there. more

A real Japanese izakaya in NY 4/24/2007

Aburiya is basically just a high end izakaya. It's owned by a company that run 6 other successful upscale restaurants in Japan. The food is both good and authentic. Pros: Authentic Cons: Not cheap more

Nobu prices for mediocre food. 4/24/2007

Dined here on Friday night with six other friends. Quickly spent about $650 (they add 20% gratuity with 6 or more). I will never come here again. It is too expensive and the menu was filled with bland tasting items (I know that Japanese food is bland but if I'm shelling out $90/person, the food should at least be somewhat tasty)!!! It took about over an hour for all of our orders to come out. I guess the food comes out piece by piece while we starve. Here are some ridiculous items on the menu (prices are estimated). Grilled cherry tomatoes ($8): 5 grilled cherry tomatoes on a wooden skewer (that's it!) Grilled mushrooms ($9): two medium grilled mushroom caps, sliced (that's it!) Sirloin steak ($40): 6-8 oz steak, sliced (that's it!) Homemade tofu ($10): 1 cup of tofu; tasted like plain flan without sugar. Pros: Seating; Service was friendly Cons: Prices; Food; Portions more

A little piece of Tokyo hidden in New York City 1/19/2007

Having been raised in Japan, I can honestly say that this restaurant offers wonderful and authentic Japanese food. From the moment you walk in, you feel as though you've been transported to a small Izakaya in Tokyo. The specials are great as are the items on the regular menu The atmosphere is homey, pleasant, and not too loud. The interior is simple with nice wooden panels and private booths, regular tables and counter seating are available. From families to business men to younger clients, the restaurant attracts quite a range of individuals. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a truly authentic Japanese meal. They also have a great grapefruit chu-hai (grapefruit juice and shochu) made with a fresh half-grapefruit which is brought to your table and squeezed freshly for you!!!! Yum! more

At Aburiya Kinnosuke, patrons are treated to an insider's view of Japan. From its mostly Japanese clientele to the extensive menu not often found outside Japan, This restaurant is every bit the real thing. Guests are invited to take part in the action here, where sochu cocktails involve citrus to be hand-squeezed, and grilled dishes require cooking over a small table top charcoal grill. Yawarakani, a kind of Japanese comfort food involving ground-chicken-mini meatloaves cooked over open charcoal is one of the highlights of the menu. Ingredients are top-notch and the attention to detail from the chefs in the open kitchen is superb.
