Dr. Barkley is a very good vet - he clearly knows his stuff and he clearly cares about the animals. We've always received good care for our cats.\r \r What he doesn't seem to be is a people person. He may not be super comforting and he's not going to be super patient with you if you don't follow his directions. He has some "smart-ass" moments (as seen in the "I'm not a bank" in another review) and will probably tell you what he thinks about something, maybe bluntly.\r \r Fortunately for me, that's a very common personality type in my line of work, so I'm comfortable with him. If you're a sensitive, "high-touch" person, he may not be for you.\r \r That doesn't mean he isn't a nice, compassionate man - he's just lacking in "high-touch" people skills. When our first cat died he seemed personally upset, and he was very good to us.\r \r I don't really want someone who's going to cry with me and hold my hand. This vet is a miserable man who obviously has some big problems - One of them, not being able to pay for his well decorated cat hospital because no one will go to him. He was very rough with our sweet, well behaved cat and didn't seem to care about the cat or us. He was very condescending to my questions and never said hello or thank you to us after we spent hundreds$ with him. - His staff is excellent, caring and kind, Dr. Barklay an uncaring, cruel man - who isn't much of a vet. Dr. William Barclay is a 5 star veterinarian.\r \r Some of the negative reviews I am reading here on the internet at Yahoo, Insider Pages and on Yelp I find hard to believe and consider the comments a slanderous attempt to discredit an excellent doctor. Several appear to be written by the same person under an anon name. In today's litigious society, comments should be considered very carefully before they are written. Once you put something on the internet, it is there forever and you can't take it back. \r \r I just can't see Dr. Barclay sending any cat home bleeding or refusing to euthanize a cat because it wasn't humane. It is the owner's decision to put a cat down, not the doctor's decision. Papers must be signed by the owner authorizing the vet to euthanize the pet. If the owner of the cat wanted her kitten euthanized, Dr. Barclay would not refuse the request. This man may have his credentials, but compassion- he lacks. My kitten was dying and I took her there to be put down. I was not prepared to watch her suffer, and she clearly as suffering. He was extremely rough with her and his tone of voice was not friendly. He seems like he hates his job. He told me to put her down was not humane, however there's nothing he could do for her. He sent me home with her, and she bled to death, and suffered terribly. My bill was 62 dollars. He charged me for an exam and did nothing. 62$ for him to tell he she might not make it, something I already knew. My aunt had called him asking why he said is was not humane, and he attacked her, telling her she is not allowed in his vet (She never once went there), before she had a chance to say anything more, he hung up on her. After wrapping up my dead kitten in a towel, I got a phone call from him. "I just got off a terrible phone call with you aunt and was extremely abused." I told him kindly that I do not know more

I've taken my cat to the Cat Hospital twice, and I've been very pleased with the service. I will say that the staff does care about cats, and they have taken good care of my cat when I've taken her there.\r \r During my last visit, the vet explained in clear detail what was going on with my cat, suggested ways to help her. He also seemed sad that he couldn't do more to treat her Kidney condition.\r \r This is a man who cares about cats, and his wife cares about them too. I am sure that in a desperate situation this man is probably a very CAPABLE Dr, but to me there is more to a Dr than just being capable. This man is arrogant, and seems to only be interested in the money. My favorite quote from him as he's asking me for $2000 in surgery up front "I'm not a bank, we don't do loans" awesome, thanks so much. On a personal level, this guy is a total jerk. Would not take my cats back here if their lives depended on it. FYI his wife owns Abbeywood cat clinic in Naperville. more
