Our oldest son (2 yrs old) is really into Choo Choo trains so we took him up to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL. The museum has hundreds and hundreds of train cars and engines in various states. Many are in the process of being restored while many other are fully functional and drive around the museum's yard and nearby rail line.
We took a 20 minute ride on a late 1800's Pullman car which was a scenic way to enjoy the car. A museum/gift shop, train diner provided some other diversions for our little ones while we visited. The museum has steam, diesel, electric and trolley cars all of which make scheduled runs throughout the day. Be sure to check their website for what will be operating during your visit.
