My oldest child attends Nelson,6th grade. One of my first irritations with this school came in the start of the year. My son was stopped in the hall and asked to hide his rosery necklace under his shirt. Now i was a bit upset and confused to their reasons and contacted the principle over the matter. She informed me that this was gang related and would be best to hide it to keep teachers from getting the wrong ideas. That is when I became very concerned about what this school teaches children. I know that teachers are not allowed to teach their beliefs but when did it become exceptible to discriminate a childs belifs? I told the principle that I was sorry that she felt this way and informed her that my son wears the necklace as a reminder and protection. I also let her know that if gang members wear them that maybe its a good thing and shows that we all get lost but having a sign of faith may help them find their way. After that I became worried that there is in fact a gang problem at this school and it is the reason I moved to this area to keep my honor student..my shy quiet son away from danger.
