I've been a fan of Zaps since it first opened several months ago. There was something very appealing about the board posted outside advertising "something different", and being a fan of the tagline I figured I'd follow the advice.
Only problem is, I've like Zaps so much since then that I've had trouble trying something different for months.
According to the staff, zaps are the Polish equivalent of late-night drunk pizza. At a glance: a 16in baguette cut down its length, garnished with mushrooms, cheese, and several other toppings (think onions, ham, olives), then quickly toasted in an oven so it remains crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The result is a quick, filling bite. I've become quite addicted to the place and will find myself there at least a couple of times a week. While I can't make an informed conclusion about the calorie count of a single zap, the ingredients used are consistently fresh and I've never come out of the joint feeling bloated or like a stuffed bear.
Now, perhaps my only gripe: due to the cooking process taking something like 600 degrees over two minutes, there aren't that many ingredients with which to top one's zap and the novelty can wear off over time. While their farmer and caprese zap are excellent, I sometimes wish I could add something new like green peppers, or perhaps chicken breast.
I also wish they were open until later hours on weekends (this would be stellar at 2am on a Saturday), although I hear they'll petition the corresponding authorities for a permit. The location is quite small and hard to notice, but I've never seen it full enough to warrant additional seating.
Still, this is one of my favorite new places in Allston be it for a quick lunch, or when I feel like having something lighter for dinner.
