Like most people, I was very apprehensive when it came time to have my first root canal. Everything I had ever heard detailed some of the most painful experiences of everyone's life. This is not so, as i came to pleasantly find out. Root canals really are painless. Dr. Keith Elliott and his staff are all very knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to educate and give the facts about root canals. His office is located in Johnson City inside of an older, restored Victorian home. The ambiance was, of course, the first thing that struck me as it was definitely not your average fluorescent sea of endless cubicle-like rooms with "torture chairs" in the center. Although I must admit, at second thought you do sort have this "root canal performed at home" feeling. However, all of that is put to ease as the process is explained to you. Upon actually being in one of the two procedure rooms, you will find the latest technology in devices placed among CLEAN facilities and a mix of Victorian essence and charm. Not bad so far. As with any procedure, you will first be numbed. Not just numbed, super numbed. The entire right side of my face from my forehead to my ears to my chin was numb. This will be annoying a little later as it takes around 4 to 6 hours to fully wear off. However, you will be very thankful during the process. And, yes, just like most dental professionals, Dr. Elliott and the staff will attempt talking to you during the numbing process and with instruments in your mouth. (I still think they do this to humor themselves, although they try to pass it off as a way of calming you and making you comfortable) During the procedure, they will place a gauze-like strip over your eyes if you want. This way, after the other senses being removed, the only unsettling notion of a root canal is the sound. And, the sound really isn't too bad all things considered. Bottom line, root canals are not painful and New South Endodontics will show you how.
