Blacksburg, as a small, college town, has dozens of cafés and pizza places, but fortunately it's just large enough to have a sprinkling of genuine international cuisine. Kabob House is a welcome addition to the mix, serving Mediterranean food with a leaning toward the Middle Eastern. Then menu offers several varieties of the kabobs of its name, as well as a handful of other entrées and a wide selection of appetizers.
I tried the spinach and feta-stuffed chicken for my entrée. The first bite was unexciting, but this was because my palate is used to the overseasoning you'll find elsewhere -- it turned out to be much more subtly flavored, so that it improved with each bite, the sign of a really good chef. The kabobs I sampled were predictable but good (and might have been more exciting if they'd been ordered spicy instead of mild). The hummus appetizer was more strongly flavored but still a pleasure, and the grape leaves were far more enticing in taste than they looked. The caramel in the caramel custard dessert was a bit on the burnt side, but it blended nicely to make a pleasing, if not thrilling, finish.
The restaurant was very quiet -- not surprising for a Sunday, and perfect for our large group. I hope their business continues to pick up, because I'd like to see them thrive in Blacksburg.
