Review content:
Except for frequent staff turnover I've been pleased with Burton Glen for six years. That changed in 2008-2009. Sadly, I feel the new principal has fostered an unhealthy atmosphere, discouraging communication. Last year's traffic situation became dangerous when fewer staffers helped during drop-off and pick-up times. Trying to improve safety, the new principal shut parents out of the school. Now parents can only stand outside to pick up students as they are called. And students aren't referred to by name: both parents and students must memorize a number. If your student doesn't catch the number, you're in for a long wait. The loudspeaker system is also deafeningly loud and should be evaluated as to whether repeated exposure will affect hearing. Picking up your child used to be a plus, since parents formed good relationships with teachers and stayed in the loop. But those days are gone. And as of last year students in my child's class--not just those being punished, but all students--couldn't sit with friends at lunch or have time together after school (recess doesn't happen regularly either). My child became discouraged about attending since friendships were discouraged and fights and violence increased. I am discouraged that the new principal doesn't seem to be friendly to parents or students. The only time she spoke to me last year was when she interrupted a friendly conversation between personnel and myself to scold me for asking about her new parking system. And the only smile I saw last year was when her family members were in the audience. I don't begrudge her high-end wardrobe or expensive foreign car but these factors point up that she's out of touch with parents. While most parents in Genesee County were struggling last year to pay bills or hold a job she didn't seem to consider family budgets or job requirements. While special assemblies and meetings were previously held 15-30 minutes after school, last year a parent would have to miss work and return an hour or two after dro
