Located in Castro Valleys "Castro Village" two blocks from the CV BART Station. Note the correct address on the updated comment above --
This is a "gem" local diner for CV natives. Kept well hidden in the center of old Castro Valley. They have breakfast lunch dinner menu that is a good price for the hearty plates they serve up.
Hugo is the chef and sometimes can be seen in the dining room visiting with the locals and asking about their meals and day,
The menu is basic comfort foods and Hugo is famous for his burgers that I have tried and can say they are the best, the ground round is of high quality.
The breakfasts are very hearty, four egg omelets. The vegetarian garden omelet is amazing with fresh veggies from the season. The Capers French toast is also a favorite dish, filling thick dipped with a cinnamon touch.
The hard to find Monte Cristo sandwich is a gem from the lunch menu, dipped and fried just right and served with a fruit salad. The best deep fried sandwich I have had. This is a menu item I have a hard time finding in other diners.
The dinner menu sticks with the freshest of ingredients that Capers is famous for. I had the 16oz mushroom steak and it was huge and covered in an amazing sauce, served with home made mash or baked potato.
The downside to Capers is the location, deep in old Castro Village were the parking can be difficult on the weekends. But its worth the walk if you have to park out side the Village.
The price is right 6.00 - 14.00 - they are open 7am - 830pm and you may find the chef and owner Hugo their to take your order and comments.
