Citibank lost three of my checks from one ATM deposit. They immediately debited the money from my account. This was right before the first of the month. I called to complain (a morbidly frustrating experience involving obscene wait times, dropped calls, Indian reps with a poor grasp of the English language, and having to bitch and holler to get a supervisor on the line), and was promised a provisional credit while they worked an "investigation" which turned up nothing- because they did not actually investigate. So they re-debited the money, without prior notice. My checking account was a mess and overdrawn, what with rent due and all, then over balance. I called again and endured the usual customer disservice, and eventually got them to do a REAL investigation while I dug up copies of checks from three people and got them all to stop payment. I wrote a strong letter and mailed it with my 'evidence'. This whole time I am treated as if I am trying to defraud my bank. Finally they FIND THE CHECKS!! But they didn't tell me- I found out because one of the check writers found hers had been cashed, after she stopped payment on it (You guessed it, she has Citibank as well- two accounts- they put the stop for the wrong account). Again, a long phone call on my cell. The woman I spoke with was sympathetic and caring but confusing and topical. She offered me a savings with 4.5 % int as a compensation- I told her too bad, I use ING. End of call. I thought, it's all over. But no. I check my account and there are zero dollars. What they did was give me ANOTHER provisional credit, after they found the checks and before they tried to even cash them. Why would a bank be so retarded? Obviously they were stopped- have these people even heard of identity theft? And to top it all off, they charged me the ten bucks for a returned check. Totally ridiculous. Another frustrating phone call, where I don't even bother to get a supervisor. I just want to close my account at this point, and avoid this wretched institution forever. I ask the rep what I need to do to close my account and he gets an attitude with me by trying NOT to answer my question. He's pausing and hemming and hawing, looking for a bone to throw me. Ugh, disgusting. This place is fully deserving of it's nickname.
