With the news constantly reminding me to spring the clocks forward this weekend, I knew it was only a matter of time that the days of frigid temps were soon going to give way to mild spring time weather – at least the two or three weeks of it we get in NYC. But today it’s blustery, bitter cold, and despite the sour faced hoards of New Yorkers bustling around the city streets, this weather made me happy because it was perfect for a Pho. For those of you unfamiliar with the dish, Pho is a Vietnamese beef soup comprised of clear broth, noodles, various thin cuts of beef (steak, brisket, or flank), and garnished with onions, scallions, cilantro, thai basil, bean sprouts, lemon or lime. Top all that off by mixing in some hoisin sauce and sriracha, a very hot, yet flavorful, Vietnamese chili sauce, and you have one big ol’ bowl of deliciousness that’s a complete meal in one course. Aside from the incredibly large serving size and the robust flavors of cilantro, thai basil, cinnamon and anise that come through in the broth, the best part about Pho is the price. At Thái So’n restaurant on the corner of 74th Street and Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights, Queens, a serving will cost you all of $5.25 for the deluxe (read: big) bowl. Of course at those prices you’re not dealing with a fine dining establishment, but you’re eating expertly prepared, wonderfully flavorful, authentic Vietnamese food. They also serve a Bahn Mi sandwich, which is much cheaper and more authentic than what’s being touted as such in the rest of the city. Once the weather warms up and I can enjoy one of these delectable sandwiches outside, I’ll be sure to tell you about it.
