Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant 1857 Penfield Road Penfield, NY 14526 585.385.1410 http://www.losamigosmexrestaurant.com/ I’ve been driving by this restaurant for quite awhile. It always looked closed. I guess that’s what happens when you convert an old house to a restaurant and have everyone come in the back door. It never looked like anyone was home. I finally decided it’s Mexican time and we stopped on in. The first thing that hit us was the overwhelming smell of bleach. Not just someone wiped up a spill, but that the entire place was just wiped down and they also decided to put some in the air conditioners to keep the smell alive. It was overpowering. Downstairs there was a bar area that looked like what you would do in your basement but shouldn’t. Put up some dividers, some bad paneling, a drop ceiling and Voila! A bar. We walked upstairs to the dining area and the bleach smell was just as powerful. We were greeted and seated immediately, near the kitchen. We were starving and when the chips and pico de gayo was placed on the table, we dived in. Finally something redeeming about Los Amigos! This was, hands down, the BEST pico de gayo I had ever tasted. Hot, fresh and really quite awesome. Hot enough, in fact, that the bleach smell went away. Perfect! I ordered a margarita and my dining partner ordered a Corona. You can’t mess up a Corona (unless you put Grenadine in it. I swear, people do this) and the margarita tasted like something that came out of a bucket. I like mine on the rocks, and in order to do that well, it can’t be a bad mix. I am not sure what they use, but it could have been a lot better. I ordered a Veggie Combo ($9.10), which consisted of a cheese enchilada, a cheese and bean burrito along with Spanish rice and refried beans. The cheese was quite stiff and not melted enough, but other than that, the dish was okay. My dining partner ordered the Tamale Dinner($10.45). He was very pleased, and stated they were the best tamales he has had in a very long time. Many restaurants don’t carry them, because they are so time consuming to make. If you like Tamales, or are in the mood for pico de gayo, I would recommend a stop. Otherwise, the search is still on for an excellent Mexican restaurant.
