I had two vintage coats that needed a cleaning and a pair of jeans that needed to be hemmed. Who do I go to? Who can I trust my vintage coats to?
Certainly not the last cleaner I had who cleaned a vintage silk velvet victorian coat and said the stains that appeared were invisible stains. Which meant the coat was immaculate before cleaning but was returned to me with a spot that is now being camouflaged by a brooch.
I was ready to give up until I decided to give Janet French Cleaners a try. After speaking on the phone with a very nice and knowledgeable owner, I felt confident to hand over my vintage coats to this establishment. I also wanted my jeans to be hemmed where the original hem is removed and reattached so retain the jean hem look.
Its very rare to be able to talk to the tailor directly but the owner is also the experienced tailor. He understood me perfectly and assured me that he knew what I was talking about after my extensive description.
I nervously instructed that the coats were indeed vintage and didn't want any invisible stains to appear. I also said due to storage, I felt the coats were musty and needing a good cleaning but feared the material may be too old to withstand the chemicals.
The end result was perfection! My jeans looked just as I wished they would. They were the perfect length and the hem was expertly reattached. At that moment I decided this was my tailor from this point on. My vintage coats were fresh looking and the musty smell was gone. The man explained that the coats were steamed not pressed to clean the fabric out without causing shine to the fabric and it was gentle enough to not harm the fabric.
I was very satisfied with the service of this establishment. No attitude, no rush. I felt that this owner was running a very high standard business where you can entrust him with your most expensive threads and he would take care of them as his own.
