My parents went to Chicago a few months ago and they couldn't stop raving about the Chicago style pizza that they tried. Then, they went to Austin a couple of weeks ago and tried out Mangia and they raved about that! My husband and I were in Austin this weekend, so we decided to check it out. We were not disappointed! We have never been to Chicago before, so we can't compare it to "the real thing" but my parents assured us that it's pretty close. If you've never had Chicago style pizza before, the toppings are on the bottom, then the cheese is on top of the toppings and the sauce is on top. It's an interesting concept and since I LOVE sauce, I think it's great! The sauce on this pizza had a lot of flavor and was different from any other sauce I've ever had. We went with a large group of people, so we ordered several different pizzas. We ordered a pepperoni pizza, the "Mangia Mia" (which is a combination pizza with sausage, pepperoni, fresh mushrooms, sliced tomatoes, green peppers, onions, and garlic) and a plain cheese pizza for the kids. Everything (including the plain cheese) was delicious. They were very accommodating for our large group of 10 adults and 2 children and rearranged the seating in the restaurant to accommodate us. They also checked up on us frequently to refill our drinks and to see if there was anything else that we needed. On a busy Saturday night, all of this was impressive in my book! If stuffed pizzas aren't your thing, you can also get regular thin crust pizzas. The price for the Chicago style pizzas ranges from $5.60 for a 6" individual one-item pizza to $19.25 for a 14" large pizza. The specialty pizzas are a little bit more expensive and range from $8.60 for the 6' to $27.25 for the large. The "thin crust" ranges from $4.50 for a one item 6" to $16.75 for a one item 16" extra large. In addition to pizza, they also offer a variety of appetizers (from tortilla soup to spinach artichoke dip and buffalo wings), a variety of salads, and burgers and sandwiches. They also have a kids menu with items like corn dogs, chicken tenders, and mini pepperoni pizzas, and the cost is only $3.50 which is very reasonable. I didn't try any of the other menu items and my sister and her husband don't know anyone else who has. Pizza is definitely their specialty! In fact, they were voted the 2005 National Independent Pizzeria of the Year by Pizza Today. If you are going to get a Chicago Style pizza, I would recommend calling and ordering it in advance as they take 30 minutes to cook. They also offer delivery and catering services. You can view their menu online and find out more about them at www.mangiapizza.com. I have to say that after this experience, I'm hooked on the Chicago style pizza (even if it's not the healthiest thing in the world) and now I just need to find a place that makes it in my area!
