After touring several big-name local gyms, I finally settled on the Y on Spear Street. I was originally skeptical, thanks mostly on outmoded stereotypes based on the vocal stylings of the Village People. But then I finally took a tour. Wow. They have a top-notch facility with all the cardio, free weight and circuit machines a girl could ask for, plus an Olympic-sized lap pool, spinning, a wide variety of classes and several stretching areas. The locker rooms are huge, clean and well appointed. You need your own lock, although they do feature a bank of penny lockers (and supply pennies at the front desk) for those times you forget, as well as free towels. And you can feel good knowing your dues are going towards programs that build and help the local community instead of some giant corporation.
