Review content:
I went to Yummy Cupcakes after visiting their website and reading the City Search reviews. The store is conveniently located next door to Sur la Table. They have a cute display of IKEA furniture to the right as you enter the store. The store is well staffed with three employees on the sales floor on a Saturday afternoon.
Sadly, the IKEA display and the location where the only good experiences that I had with this place. Entering for the first time can be confusing. Do you walk up to the register and order? Do you stand at the front, near the employee that is to busy to make eye contact with entering customers? What do you do? The service does not come quickly and no one greets you as you enter, which is odd for a place that is asking you to shell out $2.50 to 3.00 a cupcake. Eventual a girl from the back appeared and asked what I wanted. Her shirt was filthy, decorated with ten different shades of frosting and a smug of who knows what. For a moment, I thought I was looking at a Jackson Pollock painting. I almost lost my appetite, but after struggling for street parking I was committed to my gastronomical mission at this point. I choose my cupcakes: a Cherries Jubilee and a Chocolate Cappuccino.
We walked to the register, where I was deluge with a conversation between two employees. Register girl complained that she had come in early to make cupcakes for a customer that was late arriving. The employee was visibly annoyed with the absent customer and continued to complain to and the box folding employee seated behind me. They continued complain about a variety of customers and later moved onto a discourse about visiting relatives. All the while, I just want to have my $5.00 cupcake duo and to get out of there.
Arriving home with my cupcakes was the worst part. After the sugary escapade in Santa Monica, I was looking forward to at least having something "yummy". But it was dry. Not just a little dry but cardboard dry. My advice: try to avoid this place.
Pros: Location
Cons: Service, 50% chance one of your cupcakes will be dry
