Review content:
Z Salon is a very popular salon and spa in the East End. The parking lot is usually full, and on one occasion I could not find a single available spot (I ended up parking at the apartment complex behind it). The millions of people who work there try to make it a pleasant experience for you. They hold open the door when you arrive, they address you by your first name on the phone, they offer you something to drink if you have to wait. The decor is neutral...muted, earthy tones...and feels rich and luxurious.
Z offers manicures, pedicures, makeup sessions, massages, facials, haircuts, highlights and much more. I've personally had a massage there, as well as haircuts and highlights. The massage, upstairs, was nice and relaxing as you would expect, and included use of a sauna. The downstairs area, where haircuts, highlights and makeovers, are offered, is about as far from relaxing as you can get. It is noisy and busy and bustling and feels slightly cramped. You can choose between a wide variety of stylists with differing ability levels (and corresponding price ranges). I started going to my stylist when she was a "New Talent" but now she is one of the upper level stylists and I pay $55 per cut. She's amazing though and gives me the best haircuts of my life. Tip is included, as well as a wash/cut/style and hand and scalp massage.
When I was married in 2004, my whole bridal party had their hair done there, and we were pleased with the results in general. I have to admit that it was a hassle dealing with the co-ordinator though and there were several mix-ups and paperwork goofs and the like.
Two more things: (1) Z is an Aveda salon...so be aware that they will try to sell you lots of pricey Aveda hair and makeup products; and (2) book early...the good slots book up fast.
