Yes, they do cost a bit more than some of the other chains. But if you go in during a buy 1 get 1 sale, you can come out ahead of the cheaper stores, and get the better customer service. They always call me by name, and they offer to take my groceries to my car. They are friendly, and helpful. The store is clean, and items are easy to find. They have wonderful sales, such as the BOGO sales. My only gripe is that you do have to buy 2 to get the deal. Some stores offer BOGO, but if you buy just one, they charge half price. Not so at Harris Teeter. If you buy one, it is full price. So, even if I don't need two cake mixes, I have to buy them to get the discount. Not a big complaint, but the one thing I would like to see different.
