I took our 6 year old parakeet Chloe in because she had previously injured her foot on a swing in her cage. Dr. Baeza examined her and found a large tumor in her belly and said she would die from this so I decided it was best to peacefully put her to sleep rather than see her suffer over time. I was expecting and hoping that Chloe would go to sleep quietly and peacefully but instead I saw her appear to be gasping for breath and choking and blood appearing in her mouth. It was a terrible thing to watch and perhaps it would have been better if she was given a gas sedative before the injection. I will always wonder if a step was skipped here and if a more peaceful outcome would have happened with another vet. I guess I'll never know but the image of our sweet little Chloe appearing to suffer through what should have been a peaceful euthanasia will always be embedded in my memory. Things that may happen during a euthanasia should be explained clearly so that pet owners know what to possibly expect. Maybe the same thing would have happened elsewhere but it happened here and for this reason I could never return to Street Road Animal Hospital again.
