I filed the following letter at the MasterCard web site for customer complaints:\r \r The following merchant refused to process my MasterCard transaction on my Bank of the West MasterCard on 7/29/2009 at 3:55 PM (PST):\r \r Staples\r 121 Bernal Rd, #80\r San Jose, CA 95119\r \r According to the store manager, Staples policy is as follows: Any card with the word "Debit" on the card MUST be processed as a "debit transaction" even if the card has the MasterCard emblem. Every merchant I have ever visited has processed this same card as a MasterCard transaction, I pointed out to the Staples store manager, who replied as follows: Staples has "a strict corporate policy of NOT processing MasterCard transactions if the card is also a debit card." (A debit transaction requires a password, and due to its increased risk, I prefer to use the MasterCard portion of my card for store purchases.)\r \r The manager even indicated that the register is programmed NOT to proces MasterCard transactions if the card is
