Review content:
We tried La Sombra for the first time last night and it was great! I wanted to try some place new for my birthday dinner and luckily I made a great choice. We started off with drinks; I really enjoyed the batido de pina y jengibre (castillo silver rum, pineapple juice, ginger, honey). For an appetizer we chose the guasacaca (Venezualan guacamole with corn arepas and chifles). The name is a little off-putting, but it was delicious. The portion was modest, but the taste alone made it worth the price.
For our main dishes, we both chose the aji de gallino risotto (braised chicken risotto with aji amarillo, walnuts, potato and Argentinian parmesan). The dish was full of flavor and had just the right amount of spice. Perfect!
The only drawback of the evening was that they were out of fried plantains, which was probably what I was most excited about trying, but I will be forgiving because the waiter informed us right as we were being seated as opposed to waiting until I ordered them. The service was fantastic. The host (who I believe was one of the owners) was very friendly and the wait staff were very attentive and professional.
The dining room had a nice modern design that I admired, but we opted to eat on the patio, which was very relaxing.
We will definitely go back again and try other dishes. Next time I'll go for the ceviche and hope that they have the fried plantains.
