The phrase “puff, puff, pass” might imply something illegal in the modern world, but its origins are derived from the use of hookah, a 1600 year old tradition started by Turkish tribesmen. Today, general manager Matthew Sloman and Excalibur Hookah Lounge are keeping the coals, as well as the tradition of smoking hookah, alive and well in San Diego. “I have some of the best hookah in town,” boasts Sloman. You may not have seen Excalibur Hookah Lounge while walking down the streets of Hillcrest. To reach the shop, one must travel through a narrow alleyway off of 5th Avenue or know about the tiny parking lot hidden around back, which rarely has space available. Once arriving at Excalibur, you are lead back to the smoking room, which is furnished in a classy Turkish design that enhances the Middle Eastern ambiance when paired with the right mood lighting. There are 25 specialty hookahs at Excalibur, many of which use Hookah Hookah. tobacco and are infused with wine or juice in the water vase. For those choosing a more adventurous evening, try the chocolate milk infused hookahs and you will not be disappointed. The lounge is a place to smoke, but it is also one that is deeply rooted in social interaction, so make sure you bring your friends. Excalibur has the “puff puff” part of hookah down so well that you most definitely do not want to pass it up.
