I ate lunch at Johnny's today, after reading great reviews on this site and others. When I arrived, I LOVED the unpretentious atmosphere and thought that the staff was very, very nice. An 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. I ordered a sausage po-boy, and my buddy ordered a shrimp po-boy. We both ordered gumbo, too. Overall, our food was above average. The bread for the po-boy was flaky and flavorful. Problem was, Johnny's skimped on the meat (shrimp on my buddy's and sausage on mine). The sandwich had really good flavor, overall, but the ratio of bread to substance was too high (way too little meat). On both po-boys, there was no meat for the last two inches of sandwich.\r

I was disappointed, given the ratings of the restaurant, and given its reputation. Perhaps it is the best in New Orleans. If so, that is a sad statement, as better po-boys may be available in other cities (like Chicago, where I live) than in their native cities. I found the same to be true of Pat's and Geno's of Philadelphia. Almost all bread and very little meat. To me, this is a sign that Johnny's success may have gotten to its head, and that it may have forgotten what got it there. They've tried to skimp and risk ruining their reputation as a result. Shame. Good guys, those folks at Johnny's.
Pros: Great atmosphere, flavor and service.
Cons: If you like an all bread po-boy, this is your place. Too skimpy with the meats...
