On a recent visit to Oxford, I asked to lunch with business associates at an old favorite from years past. I ordered the traditional shrimp and grits but asked to hold the bacon since I no longer eat pork but instead would they add a few extra mushrooms. No problem. When the waiter returned (much time later) I was given a plate OVERflowing with mushrooms. I had to search for the few shrimp underneath. Since the waiter did not check on us again until time for the check, I have to assume he was either embarrassed or in on the joke with the chef. Sorry I ever asked to alter the popular recipe and get a taste of nostalgia. It won't happen again.
