We had a problem with our furnace. The guy came out and did a service call. At the end of the service call after he did a bunch of reapirs he said you have a hole in your furnace and needs to be replaced. He said that this particular model had so many problems that the manufacturer is replacing them for nothing and you would only have to pay for the installation which would be about $800. He said this model is bad and the furnace essentially ""melted"". The catch was you had to be the original owner of the house when the furnace was put in (which we are not). We explained to them that money is tight and if there was anything they could do because a new furnace is 5K - 12K. They said sorry, nothing they could do. The furnace is not that old. I think it's about 12 years old. \r \r After a lot of phone conversations they said they couldn't help us out. But, they said they would give us a quote for a new furnace. A few weeks went by and still no quote. After another call, they said they would do it ""the next day"". Still no quote. We then called and they said they wouldn't give us a quote until we settled our bill for our oil delivery (from 4 weeks ago, not that long). Granted we had a bill, but it was only about 30 days since we had gotten it. We paid that immediatly and said we wanted the quote.\r \r Then, we got another bill from them. This was for $432 for the repair work on the furnace. So I called and said how can you charge us that much when you said we need a new furnace. We may not have even done the work had we known the bill was that much. They said they $432 was ""pretty standard"" and ""not actually that much money"" for what they did, but they never told us upfront how much the work would be before they went ahead and did it. They said unless the bill is over $1000 their policy is to just do the work and then bill the customer. I said I thought there bill was ridiculous for repair what is essentially a bad furnace that needs replacing and we were never given a quote to decide if we want the work done prior to starting and completing it before they bill us.\r \r They now say that we have to pay that repair bill or they won't even deliver oil. They said that they had tons of work to customers who are begging us to pay them upfront and they are flat out and couldn't even do it until January.\r \r Pretty scummy I would say.
