On a tip from a friend (thanks John), I put Route 9 on my list. On a recent Friday evening quest for a good meal in Coral Gables, dear wife spotted Route 9, so we happily wandered in. One look at the menu and we knew it was going to be amazing. And it was! Their tagline is "American-style cuisine with a bit of Latin and Florida flair." \r
\r
To start we had an eggplant arancini appetizer: eggplant, garlic and melty cheese all rolled into a golf ball sized lump of deliciousness, fried then served with a spicy marinara sauce on the side. How does classic Mac 'n cheese with minced jalapenos sound, followed by slow-braised short rib and caramelized shallot flautas with au jus crema.\r
\r
That's a mouthful to say and equally yummy. We took our time with this meal, accompanied by a reasonably priced bottle of Artazu Garnacha which was perfectly matched with the spice and heat of the dishes.\r
\r
The the topper was a banana creme with caramel sauce and graham cracker crust. Smooth banana creme, mmmmmmmmmmmm!\r
\r
Other dishes worth going back for are a whole yellowtail snapper with sofrito marinade or fig-glazed cornish hen with chorizo-cornbread stuffing and sweet potato mash.\r
\r
The decor is understated and clean. The service efficient and knowledgeable.
