Being relatively new to the area, I sought out a dental facility close to home that was covered by my dental insurance. It had been almost 2 years since my last dental exam and cleaning. Family emergencies and related issues had put my own dental care on hold, but I was dutifully complying with the flossing and brushing at least twice daily and regularly using mouthwash. I was experiencing no dental pain or problems, and simply needed an exam and a cleaning. When I completed the dental application for Southwest Dental, they asked when my last dental visit had been. I replied honestly that it had been almost 2 years. Imagine my surprise when, during the exam, I was told that not only did I (allegedly) have bone loss and a cavity, but I supposedly needed a special cleaning with an extra-cost antibiotic rinse due to extensive gingivitis/ periodontal disease. Now, I'm an intelligent person with good oral hygiene habits so I was shocked and very wary about the negative diagnosis I was given. I mean, I would have known if I had symptoms of gingivitis/periodontal disease--bleeding, tender, swollen, red gums and infection. I exhibited none of these indicators, yet, Southwest Dental insisted that I needed the procedures they were recommending, which would have amounted to $215.00 of out-of-pocket costs not covered by my insurance. I was so disappointed that they would try to gouge me like that, using scare tactics to pressure me into unnecessary procedures. I got a basic cleaning and never went back. Incidentally, my new (honest) dentist says my teeth are what dentists dream of--well-cared for and requiring bare minimum professional dental care. Take that Southwest Dental!

Cons: USE OF SCARE TACTICS TO ENCOURAGE UNNEEDED PROCEDURES
