My green cheek conure Jimmy has been having seizures ever since I got him a couple of years ago. He's a rescue bird, so he didn't have a great life before he landed with me, and two vets in Virginia and another team on Long Island could not figure out what was causing the seizures. I was told everything from calcium deficiency to heart disease to metal poi soning (the system won't let me use that word?), and the poor little guy has been through hospitalizations, tube feeding, chelation therapy, the works. $3,000 in vet bills later, I still had no answers. \r \r Dr. Monaco figured it out though: It appears that Jimmy has epilepsy. Dr. Monaco wrote a scrip for seizure medication, and Jimmy has been much better ever, with MUCH fewer incidents. Plus, Dr. Monaco has a great bedside manner and he charges a very reasonable, affordable fee. I bring both of my birds to him from out in Holbrook, and the care they get is well worth the drive. He really knows his stuff, and he's a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners specializing in Avian medicine--only about 100 of those in the world. If you have birds, especially ones with special needs, he's the guy to see! Pros: The excellent care, Saturday morning hours, friendly staff. Cons: Sometimes there's a wait at the office, but I'm guessing that's because he's in high demand because he's so good.
