Review content:
Golfers galore make the pilgrimage to Montauk Downs to experience the Robert Trent Jones course at the end of Long Island. Players of this course understand why. Ocean breezes, punitive out of bounds, and challenging sand and water hazards make the 6,950 yard (getting longer each year as a few holes are renovated annually) course a stiff challenge for all golfers. Fairways and greens are consistently in great shape and benefit from the proximity to water in three directions. Gorgeous views of that water are available from many of the course's holes.\r
The 12th hole is the course's signature hole - a par 3 into the prevailing ocean breeze from an elevated tee to an elevated green. The thick fescue all around and trees surrounding to the green put heavy demands on any golfer's mental game.\r
The course has excellent instructional staff, a great pro shop, and a full service bar and grill that serves typical 19th hole fare. Tee time reservations open a week in advance and are a requirement in the summer. The first hour of play is first come, first served, and you better get there early and nap in your car if you want one of those times on a summer weekend. Just like anything else in the Hamptons, Montauk Downs is at its best in the late spring, very early summer and then in the fall.
Pros: Beautiful Course. Good Challenge. Great Value
Cons: Hard to reach.
