When I was 5 years old in 1951, my dad took me to Mezza Luna for the first time. I was hooked for life. Moved from Woonsocket to East Providence when I was 8 years old, and Mezza Luna was still the place to go for the best pizza. In 1965, I joined the Air Force for a 27-year career never to live in RI again. But when I did return for a visit, Mezza Luna was always on the schedule for a taste of the best pizza anywhere. I have lived all over the US and have never found a pizza that comes close to the unique taste of a Mezza Luna.
Sorry to say, after making a stop recently to get a pizza after visiting my ailing mother in Massachusetts, I was very disappointed. I drove up to the pizzeria on Saturday evening at 9:30 pm and you could hardly tell that it was open except for a small neon "open" sign in the window. The large "Mezza Luna" sign over the front was not on because someone had forgotten to turn it on! We were the only customers in the place. The interior lighting was uneven and dimly lights the place; it's like a dungeon inside. The tables and booth seats are original (1950), except for new coverings. I don't believe there's one level table in the place. The wood paneling needs refinishing and the dull red painted walls should be repainted back to the original green. The quality of the pizza is definitely not what it used to be. The toppings, sauce, and cheese used to go right to the edge of the pie. The quality varies too much from one pizza to the next. One could always count on a consistently made pizza of the highest quality when it was a Mezza Luna! Well, no more. Another thing I noticed is the phone never rang once during the one hour we were there. In the past, customers were constantly phoning in orders for pizza whenever I was there, day or night. If you are going to run a business, then please put some time and effort into it! It's truly sad to see what has happened to this establishment under current ownership/management (or lack of Management!)
