Review content:
I went to Sum Yum Gai for the first time and had an interesting but not entirely positive experience.
I received a coupon in the ?Best of South Beach Hometown Magazine? for a buy one entree, get one 1/2 price at Sum Yum Gai. The page said ?Dine In, Carryout, Delivery.? So I called to place an order for delivery --- no one answered. I tried a few times but still, no one answered their phones. So, still craving Chinese, I decided to walk to the restaurant as it was only about 8 blocks away.
So once I got there I showed the waiter the coupon and he said it was not one of their coupons because their name was not on it. ?? I told him it was and that I had cut it out directly from their ad that I received in the mail. He checked with the manager and then said that it was only good for carryout or delivery. I know for a fact that the ad did not specify this, and I let him know that I tried to call for delivery but no one answered the phone. He said they were busy. I said okay then I would order the meal to go and make it carryout. He then came back and said that he would honor the coupon for in store eating this one time.
I took a look at the menu and noticed that the prices were more expensive in the store menu than they are online. I brought this up with the waiter and he said this is correct and not an error. I said, ?So if I get an order for delivery it costs LESS despite the additional packaging and delivery effort than it does for me to come into the restaurant?? He said yes. This really doesn?t make sense to me, but he would not honor the online advertised price.
So I ordered 2 entrees. They were both very flavorful and enjoyable. Then when I received the bill, there was an 18% gratuity charge added on. I looked on the menu and it says at the bottom that a 15% gratuity is automatically added to the bill, 18% for parties of 6 or more. I was charged 18% even though it was only me.
I tried emailing the company with my feedback and so that I could understand why all of these things were happening but their contact information on their website does not work.
Overall the food is very good but I am very disappointed with my experience at Sum Yum Gai and I would be hard pressed to recommend any of my friends or anyone visiting to eat at this establishment unless the service improves.
Pros: Food was flavorful, vegetarian choices
Cons: They don't know their own coupons or honor online pricing.
