Review content:
On 20 January 2011, after we were seated in the theatre on an advertised ?pay what you will? performance evening (the website says, ?You may pay the regular price, or more, or less, as you will?), Rogue Theatre Managing Director Cynthia Meier approached us and demanded that we either pay more or leave so that our seats could be sold to someone else who would pay more. When we protested, she said, ?I can do whatever I want because this is my theatre.?
We did not leave, but instead wrote a letter of protest to Norma Davenport, the president of the organization, (sent certified mail) protesting and asking for a apology. As of today, not only have we not received any response but our future reservations have been canceled.
This type of discriminatory and offensive treatment is unacceptable for any business, but it is especially odious for a non-profit organization that receives tax-supported contributions / funding.
Those people and organizations that are considering supporting this theatre should know of this conduct. Our recommendation is to not provide any further funds to The Rogue Theatre, whether in the form of attendance at shows or contributions.
I would add that there are numerous arts groups inTucson that offer ?pay what you will.? None have ever treated us this way.
