Review content:
I know several people who live in the Grand Oaks senior-living facility, in the assisted-living program, and I visit them about once a month and talk with them almost daily. I can't speak for the independent-living program, only the assisted-living. I should imagine it's not much different. The facility is attractive and the grounds are well maintained. The staff are generally nice and a few are exceptionally kind. The activities are interesting, and include crafts, movies and live entertainment. There is a small swimming pool, a pool room, a small library, and seating for visitors. The food is also very good, with a menu of a variety of fresh foods cooked well. The apartments are well designed and comfortable, hallways are well lit and easy to navigate. It all looks good. And on a good day, everything goes well and is worth the very high cost. Unfortunately, most days for residents of the assisted-living program are frustrating and anything but what the brochures and advertising promise. Most days, residents are left waiting hours for assistance, even to use the bathroom. There are new faces every week, and some days there are only one or two assistants for the entire facility. While most of the caregivers are nice and helpful, some are curt and rude, even insulting and bullying. Most are not trained properly in care-giving. There is no doctor or nurse on staff. Housekeeping, like everything else, is an extra charge over the very high monthly fee. The housekeeper often only runs the vacuum, and does not dust, change the sheets or towels, or clean the bathroom and kitchen. The carpets in the apartments are spotted and dirty. Fixtures in the apartments seem to be coated in a thin film of grime. Service in the dining room is hit-or-miss most days, with wrong orders served, slow service, and too-often short-staffed. Dirty dishes often sit on the tables, leaving residents without a place to sit down for their meals. Parking for visitors and residents is inadequate. Sadly, management has generally been unresponsive to complaints.
