Yes, the building is old. Yes, there is no missing the fact that you are in a not-for-profit setting. Yes, you are often with students, interns, and fellows, directly supervised by faculty professionals. But the faculty staff and team approach is exactly what it often takes to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan! In mental sciences, the patient and the patient's support structure (parents, kids, siblings, friends, etc) have to be involved. Any informed and responsible opinion can contribute, but when people on your team are educated in mental sciences it certainly helps! We like the team approach and respect the qualifications of the faculty staff. A liberal attitude to others opinion is a breath of fresh air after trying many professionals with a ""God- simplex"". The cost is lower in this setting, but the service is superior to the ""here's your script, now get out"" scams often operated in this field. If you do research on your area of concern and have input or other professional's general guidance (via books, email, or telephone consultation, for example) no one is offended nor do they discount this ( at least out loud). Seriously, though this learning environment allows and encourages advancement of the mental sciences instead of a six minute review of your script's side effects... and that's it! Pros: for mental sciences- this is the way it should be Cons: it feels like your stepping into 1965 when you arrive
