Beware of Smith Mechanical. Referred to us by our home warranty contractor (HMS) when our hot water heater started leaking in the middle of winter. When you call no one answers the phone - ever. You always have to leave a message and someone calls you back. We called roughly 10 times trying to arrange things. You will receive a voice mail as if you are calling a personal cell phone. There is no indication you are calling a legitimate company. We had to pay a 100 dollar deductible for someone to come to our home and look at our hot water heater for less than 2 minutes. A plain white van with no insignia suggesting they are a genuine contractor. Afterwards we received a call from our home warranty contractor asking if we would like to proceed with Smith Mechanical to replace our hot water heater. The home warranty person reviewed what Smith Mechanical had quoted them. There were multiple odd charges that totaled nearly 800 dollars to replace our hot water heater. Take into consideration the hot water heater was completely covered by our warranty, and the 800 was Smith Mechanical?s charges that we would have to absorb. They quoted various charges such as 200 to hall away the old hot water heater, over 200 to re-do a gas line, nearly 200 to re-do some wiring, and other charges that I can not recall. Our home is only 6 years old. After researching on-line reviews and Better Business Bureau complaints filed against Smith Mechanical we elected to get a second opinion from a licensed contractor. They said we were being scammed and that the cost (labor, parts, hauling away the old hot water heater) for replacing our hot water heater would be no more than 250-350 total. We were lucky we did some research. The cost of the hot water heater and labor was all covered by our warranty. That would not have been the case with Smith Mechanical.
