Review content:
We had read the reviews about Matteo's before traveling to Maui and were hoping for a good experience. The experience was far from good. Others have mentioned the counter ordering system, the numbers, and the rushed service. It all felt like a restaurant focused on churn and turnover, not a good dining experience. We ordered two pizzas, a bottle of chianti, and sodas for our two kids. I was surprised that led to a bill over $100. When the waitress came with the red wine, as she was placing the glasses on the table, she dumped more than 1/3rd of the bottle right in my lap. Ruined a new t-shirt I had purchased earlier that day in Kaanapali. My shorts were soaking, and I had stains down the front of my shirt. The waitress barely apologizes and claims its her first day on the job. OK, anyone who has worked in a restaurant has had a day like that. But, here's the kicker ... the manager never comes over to apologize, and they never offer to take anything off of the check. I've never heard of such a thing. What restaurant doesn't make some amends after a bonehead move like dumping a bottle of wine on a guest? When I finally walk up to the woman running the counter (I assume one of the owners), she offers to buy us a desert or a pizza. By this time, my kids are ready to leave, I want to try to salvage my shirt in the hotel laundry room, and I want to forget all about Matteo's. The pizza wasn't even that good ... soggy crust, flavorless sauce and some cheese imitator on the top. Do yourself a favor -- head to BJs in Lahaina or Bada Bing in Kihei. Better yet, go to Fred's in Kihei. Basic Mexican food, good margaritas, great view of the beach and the whales, and a friendly staff that knows good service.
Pros: Proximity to Wailea
Cons: Service, food, focus on turnover
