Review content:
My fiance (now husband) and I went into Maloy's to shop for an engagement ring. They had a good selection of antique and unusual which I was initially very excited about after some unpleasant experiences in the diamond district. We found a lovely old cut diamond at a fair price and proceeded to work with them to design the setting. We had an agreed upon price for the diamond and setting combined which was handwritten on our invoice and they turned it out in about a month. However, when my husband went to pick the ring up and settle the payment, they told him the price written on the invoice was only for the setting and the diamond price wasn't included. So in essence they tried to charge us a few THOUSAND dollars extra. I would have stuck to my guns and refused to pay it but my husband ended up compromising with them and paid an extra 1000. It marred what should have been a wonderful experience and I did not go back to them to design my wedding band. The e-ring setting isn't well done and I plan to have it reset correctly...elsewhere. Moral of this story? Insist on a CLEARLY itemized typed invoice that leaves NO room for error when designing a piece OR only buy loose stones or already set pieces with firm prices from this store. Another disheartening sight: while we were in the store, we saw a older lady bring in a beautiful gold pocketwatch to sell. I was heartbroken to hear how she was blatently lowballed. I know it's only business but it was still painful to watch...and certainly not something you would want your customers to see.
Pros: good selection of antique pieces
Cons: mediocre workmanship, unprofessional invoicing practices
