Review content:
I went to this test station on 8/3/2011 for a test-only smogcheck. I asked the technician (who I assume is the owner since he was the only person there) how much the service was. He replied it was $50 after a special $11 discount. I came to find that the listed price on the wall was $50 anyway.
He inspected my vehicle which has some issues with the dash lighting and told me that my check engine light was on and asked me how long it had been on for and asked what my mileage was since it was not easily readable.
I replied that that my mileage was probably about 170,000 miles or thereabout but wasn't sure because of the dash lighting issue and that I had noticed my check engine light had been on for a few months.
He told me that the test would be a 50/50 pass/fail possibility. He told me that if the problem that caused the check engine light to be on was an electrical problem that I would pass the test and that if it was an emissions problem that I would not pass the test. He said that if it failed he would only charge me $39 on the day of testing and then $10 for a re-test IF it was done within one month of the original test.
NO INDICIATION was given that I would fail the OVERALL test solely for the check engine light being lit until after the test was completed and he told me that I passed the emissions test but that there was an OBD fault code: P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient and that the result showed a single failure under MIL/Check Engine Light.
Regardless of the offer of a $10 retest, I will not re-test at this location because the technician made a FALSE or MISLEADING STATEMENT regarding the nature of and the potential outcome of the test.
Upon completion of the test I questioned him why I wasn't told at the beginning of my visit that it would have failed outright merely for having the check engine light on and asked him why he had not been truthful and why he had lied and he started to ""play dumb"" and pretend that he didn't understand what I was saying.
He also produced from a pocket or clipboard my vehicle registration which I had no given him nor had he asked for which had been stored in my glove compartment of my vehicle. I expressed consternation that he had searched/gone through my vehicle without my consent, as I would have surely provided that information had it been asked for.
As another customer was approaching the office I continued to speak with the technician and told him that I would not return for the restest because he had been untruthful about the whole incident and had lied to me regarding the nature of the testing procedure and its potential outcomes to which he replied ""okay"".
