I live in Ohio but have a lot of friends on the west coast, and I've heard them rave about In-N-Out for a number of years. When I visited California for the first time last week, getting a cheeseburger was literally the first thing I wanted to do. While I can't say it was the worst burger I've ever had (that dubious title goes to Johnny Rockett's), it was nowhere near as good as I had hoped and expected. I opted for a cheeseburger and fries ""Animal style."" The fries were really good, I have to admit - completely smothered in chee, sauted onions and some kind of Thousand Island dressing gloop. The burger, however, was just bleh - tasteless meat, watery tomatoes and nasty sour little pickles. Big Bird - who is not much of an In-N-Out fan - did, however, devour his lunch in characteristic lupine fashion. He even allowed me a small taste of his Neopolitan shake which, I have to say, was pretty good. I'm glad I ate at In-N-Out, and I would probably grab some of those smothered fries if i was passing by, but I wouldn't make a trip especially.
